Hey ladies! I am very new to this so please take it easy on me and know that I might ask some really stupid questions. I have recently started dating a guy that rides/races sportbikes. I have ridden with him several times and basically have become addicted. I want to get one of my own to play around with and am looking at the GSX-R 600. I like to look of the bike, the way it rides and of course, my bf is a gixxer so I will have someone to "diagnose" problems with the occur. My problem is this......(1)I have never riden a bike myself - am I crazy for wanting to just jump on one and (2) I am only 5'1" - how the heck am I going to touch the ground! Please, some advice here -
I don't mind riding with him (I actually kind of like it) but I want to venture out and enjoy some of this on my own.
Any info or advice that can be given is more than I already have :-)
I'm sure you will get planty of advice, mostly telling you NOT to get on a gixxer6 as a first bike. Take the MSF, see how you feel on one of the 250's they give you, then get a more standard bike to start with it. Try an SV, a ninja (250, 500, 650r). Have fun, wear all the gear all the time...
Welcome to SBN, Im_Back. In light of your height alone, a small bike like the ninja 250 would be my recommendation. Gixxers are uber cool, however the first time you drop it you will be devestated. Getting a bike that when it falls will not break your heart is the best bet. You focus more on learning how to ride it rather than not hurting it.
Once you get the idea of how it feels to push the bike around and how much you can and cannot do, a taller bike will not be so much of an issue. Don't make learning harder than it already is. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions!
I don't have much to add to the good advice above, except to also say that you might want to go to a few dealers and sit on all the bikes to see which one fits you best. But a Ninja 250 sounds like the best place to start, in your situation.
Also think used, for the reasons Blndebmbr mentioned above. You don't need the extra stress of worrying about dropping a brand new bike when you are learning.
How are things up there in Choctaw County ??
You'll probably have to go to Montgomery, Birmingham, Jackson or Hattiesburg to sit on a new bike. The kawi dealer in Mobile hasn't has a 250 in about 6 months.
A used 250 Ninja will hold it's value, so don't worry about a big $$ hit when you get ready to upgrade.
Remember, it's a first bike, not your ONLY bike.

The stats are against you as a new rider, and the best thing you can do is educate yourself to have a good chance of staying off the pavement or becoming a bad statistic...
I am short myself, 5'4, and own a 250 for my first bike. Trust me, it has enough power for someone who has never ridden a bike before. Just be careful and dont get in over your head and have fun!

5'4" is NOT SHORT.
If I put my hair up I'm 5'1", and would have to look up to you. In fact, I pretty much look up to anyone beyond 6th grade! You'd think I'd get a discount on clothes since I don't take up as much fabric...
