Well, my husband just got rid of his V-Star 1100 Classic and got the FZ6. Absolutely love it, both of us. Have to get the trunk. That part's for me. It wasn't until he got the FZ6 that I really liked the way it felt when I sat on it, so I'm kind of at the point I just want to learn to ride, but I think learning to ride leads to wanting to buy and so forth. We are looking forward to the whole family thing at the end of the summer, so I'm kind of between a rock and a hard place; I want to learn to ride and possibly get a bike, but if there are kids around, then I have a feeling I won't have time and the bike will sit and get dust on it. My husband doesn't think so; he'll have a 2nd toy to play with. Any thoughts??

i think you should take the MSF, that will help you decide if it is really for you or not. Then get a used 250, they only run about $1500-2000 used and hold up their value REALLY well. You won't feel so bad about leaving it in the garage and letting it sit. If you decide to sell it, you probably won't lose too much money on it. Then take it for a short ride here and there. Personally, you can't keep me off my bike as soon as i got into it. I don't have kids though, but ac does and she will chime in and let you know how she deals with it soon. How old are your kids?

I used to feel as you did... My advice is to take the msf course, and then, get yourself a 250 or 500.
I've got four kids, aged 6, 4, 3, and the baby just turned 1. While it's true that I don't get as much time to ride as I'd like, my bike certainly doesn't collect dust. The hubby and I usually take the bikes when we have a babysitter and have a bike date. It certainly makes for a cheaper date! Especially as we don't feel comfortable going to expensive restaurants in our gear, and don't order drinks at the restaurants we do go to. Quite often, we don't even bother with eating out and just ride... I also go to a ladies' bike night thingie once a week (for me, it's just an excuse to get the bike out and ride); the hubby watches the kids. I also get up for an early morning ride by myself on the weekends. My husband will take an early morning ride on the other day. He is very supportive of my riding, and as he gets to ride to the office everyday, he gives me dibs on weekend riding.
You'll be surprised at how quickly the miles rack up and how much you love riding your own bike...
Anyway, just my .02. and welcome to SBN.

Here's the perfect solution! Get an Enduro/dual sport. That way you can ride on the street. Then you can get dirtbikes for the kids and as a family you can ride off road! Big bang for the money and it creates memories that will last forever. Not to mention it teaches the kids many solid life lessons. A KLR250 would be an excellent beginner bike.
But MSF is a good starting point. If you don't like it, you haven't lost much money.
+1 on taking the MSF. Do that and then see how you feel about it.
I do have kids, though they are pretty much grown. I started riding before my youngest was born. I still found time to ride after I was recovered from the birth and everything had gotten into a routine.
Rebelde has small children, and I think she still finds time to ride. edit - I see she already posted!
But, as Mssd said, if you love it enough, you will find time for it no matter what. Some women get a babysitter and go get their nails or hair done, or plan time out with their friends. A motorcycle addict mother will get a babysitter and take a sanity-restoring ride. It's really no different than any other past-time that parents indulge in to relax or have fun. Well, it's different b/c it's MORE fun than most past-times and hobbies..
Listen to Mssd about getting a used bike as well. You won't lose money on an EX250. They hold their value quite well.
MSF FTW!!! I have one little guy (well, not so "little" but young, he's 11). I take him on the bike with me every once in a while, when I'm just going to putt around and not play road tag on the highway. When he was little, he would come with me on the quad. I guess it all depends on how stable you feel once you get a few miles under your belt, if you do decide to go for a bike.

Thanks so much; we don't have kids yet but I'm looking forward to it. I'm waiting for a reply from the dealership here on the MSF classes so I'll have to see what happens with that. As far as the gear goes, I've got everything from chaps (which, um, I won't wear on this bike) to the full face helmet. I think I'm more about protection than anything. I told my husband anything that makes me more visible the better! I just wish there were more careful people out there, you know? Thanks again!
Btw, if you want to see more info about some of the people on SBN, check out the Rider Resume thread in the New Riders Forum. You can get to mine by clicking on the link my sig below...
