Default No bike for youngest :-(

Ex said there was NO way her/my daughter was getting a motorcycle. Long story. She did emphasize no motorcycle. Ok, no problem, she gets an ATV!
(I don't give up very easily, just to retreat and find another angle of "attack")

Thanks for the input everyone.

A dirt bike would be far safer than an ATV.

how so? i can agree with you that a bike could quite possibly be safer in a low speed accident due to the big differance in weight but what are the rest of your opinions on the(saftey) pros to riding a dirtbike as opposed to a quad? a quad( in my exp) tends to have more of a contact patch with the ground, a thumb throttle(just my .02) that helps with the problem of giving the bike to much gas in a panic situation, resulting in a potentialy worse crash than when in the same situation with the thumb throttle.

A dirt bike won't crush you as easily as an ATV if it rolls over on you.

I just find it a bit ironic that the ex thinks an ATV is ok, but a dirt bike is not. Doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, ATV's have a lot of weight compared to a dirt bike. You can also get a small ATV to start, and they can also be governed so they don't go over a certain speed. You also have to watch out that some places have age restrictions as to riding them. She'll definitely have to get used to flat running for a while, doing cornering and weight shifting to get the feel of it. But, you can still kill yourself on a dirt bike as much as you can on an ATV. It all depends on the crash (but we will be vigilant to make sure that doesn't happen...)

eh... I guess so. To me an ATV is a poor substitute for a bike. But, if it makes her happy and she has fun and stays safe, I guess that's what counts.

I still question the IQ/sanity of a parent who says no to a dirt bike but yes to an ATV for their child.

I'm not taking sides... but the ex might be assuming that her daughter may be less likely to get in a serious accident on an ATV since you need less balance. Or may thinks she'll be going slow/er. But you said it... at the end of the day as long as she's having fun.

It kinda broke my heart a bit but at least she is riding and will learn how to maintain it (she helps with the Jeeps and is helping to build the rock crawler) I don't understand the reasoning myself but to keep the peace (for now LOL). I do see her quickly out growing it and wanting to go to two wheels. Pretty sure within two years she'll be on two wheel!! This will give her a chance to learn throttle control and reading the trails ahead of her (she's already good at that driving trail rigs for about two years now)
