Ok so it's been 40's in the morning and high 50's and raining since last week.
BUT NOT TODAY BABY!!. Showing sun for the next couple days, and the temps creeping back up to the 70's!! *still cold in the am though*
However this morning was STILL a whopping 41~~ You've all heard "colder than a witches titty in december"? Well this morning I was thinking "colder than a Brina's titty in Sept in OR". LOL Coz dammmmmn. BUT not too worry. With new boots, and gloves I braved the weather!!
So I'm not saying I was the suave rider I know myself to me. I felt like a damn stay-puff marshmellow girl, what with the gear and layers underneath. lol Not too mention it's like I forgot everything in the week I haven't ridden. Except for this previous week, I haven't gone two days without riding since I picked it up June 22nd. I can't even imagine how "newbish" I'm going to be when i have to put her away for weeks on end. And riding with insulated gloves is a WAY Different sensation for shifting/braking than I've been used to.
BUT DAMMIT I RODE !!!! And my day is just THAT much better because when i go outside i'll see my puuuurty sportbike, and not the cage.

Either drive it like you stole it, or make sure you don't get caught!
I felt the same way when I finally got my GS1100 together years ago. It took a couple of months to put it together (bought it in a box and rebuilt it from the frame up). There was snow on the ground the day we got it running (was living in MS then), but I didn't care. I was out riding anyway.
Having to wrap up in so many layers is one part of cold weather riding I really hate. Maintaining your dexterity is a real challenge!
Okay - I had to the celius/fahrenheit thingy so I could understand what the hell your temperatures meant.
I skipped supper last night so I could get a ride in while it was still sunny. It's dark by 7:30 here now. It was around 55 out (for me, 13), I was layered but my hands get so cold, I've yet to find a pair of warm gloves.
Oh yeah - My new ICON helmet sucks!! When it's cold and I get up to and over 80km/h there is a HUGE mother of a draft from those stupid vents that don't close, even when they are closed. It starts to feel like I have an ice cube stuck to my forehead. I should have just spent another 100 or 2 to get the Shoei I wanted. I should know by now to always by the best!
1. Yes, you should have gotten a better helmet. I've not heard many good things about Icon helmets from people who actually know what they are talking about.
2. You could always keep the Icon as a spare in case you ever need to carry a passenger for a short distance.
3. Get a balaclava!! These things help so much. I don't see how anyone can NOT wear one when it starts to get chilly out. They come in various configurations, from just covering the top of your head to covering your head, face, neck & chest. Well worth the investment, even if you have a great helmet.
I even wear a thin one in warm weather to protect my helmet liner from the natural oils in my hair & skin. Or I did before I lost the light one. I still need to buy another one. Right now I have my cold weather one only.
you mean to say you don't ride in 30's, 40's or 50's? Yegads..what kinda biker are you.
acc is right, get at the least a half-balaclava, neoprene. your chin will be sweating even if it's 20 out.

Yup, cold weather blows on sportbikes. But you eventually adapt. I used to start getting depressed but not anymore! My favorite time to ride is coming soon!
Steph~maybe throw a piece of tape over the vents. It may not be pretty but I am sure it will stop a lot of that draft. I bet electrical tape will do the best job. Keep in mind too that the draft is coming up your neck as well. So you need to safegaurd all open skin....my neck being cold is the one that will send me into shivering convulsions.....
I personally hate baclava's. They get all moist and gross from breathing. (On the ice then they freeze~it's disgusting). I bought the big neck thingy that velcroes on and tucks under the jacket up to the base of the helmet. It wraps right around and blocks all the drafts.
Hmm.. I can't find the source now, but I've seen them before that don't cover up so much of your face, but cover your head, the outer edges of your face, neck and the top of your chest. This would prevent snotcicles from forming on the material.
It might not be the actual brand "Balaclava", but something made by another company specifically for motorcycle riders. (I just use "balaclava" as a general term to refer to head warmers). I think I've seen them in cycle gear, but I'm not sure about that. If I can find more info, I'll post it here.
lol. ahhhh snotcicles. Now THAT brings back memories.. BRRRRR... I'm sorry but if your eyes freeze shut, b.c they teared up immediately upon going outside. This is JUST not something humans should deal with IMO. Hence me moving..

Actually I hate being cold so much, that I think I'll look for the velcro thingy BB described and wear it along with my balaclava when it gets cold (chilly, to you northerners )
Last Bike Week, I bought this neoprene face mask to wear on top of my balaclave b/c it was so cold and I was dreading the ride home. It was a little tricky getting my helmet on over it but, where there's a will there's a way.
I have to now listen to my bf remind that if he was with me when I bought it, he wouldn't have let me, he knew they are crap. It's his fault!
We have a couple of balaclava's around the house I will have to try. The tape idea is a good one also. Maybe I'll just pull out my old helmet. I'm familiar riding in cold weather as a passanger but it's different when your the one doing the riding.
