I never thought I would be so happy to hear that there will be a humidex this weekend. After some chilly normal weather, it will be a treat..Woo Hoo, lots of riding will be happening this weekend!
Yeah we finally broke out of the rain in upstate NY .... I rode a little today but tomorrow is the big day! After tomorrow, sad to say, my little beast is getting winterized.
I had to google "humidex" to see what you were talking about. But what I found indicated it's sort of like our "heat index", which doesn't make any sense in the context of "there will be a humidex this weekend". (There will be a heat index this weekend?)
A. The humidex is an index (a computed value as opposed to something measured) devised to describe how hot or humid weather feels to the average person. The humidex combines the temperature and humidity into one number to reflect the perceived temperature. It takes into account these two important factors that affect summer comfort. It is therefore a better measure of how stifling the air feels than either temperature or humidity alone. A humidex of 40 with, for example, a temperature of 30 degrees means that the sensation of heat when it is 30 degrees and the air is humid is more or less the same as when it is 40 degrees and the air is dry. We must be careful not to depend on this interpretation alone: it is a mere indication of physiological reactions, not an absolute measure
Eh?! I've heard of heat index before on the American channels and I'm like uh? What the hell's a heat index?? Assuming they are speaking of the humidy level which is the humidex, the proper term..**sly grin**.
Apparently they are calculated differently, from what I read earlier. If you want to gouge your eyes out, click on the links below and check out the formula to arrive at each.
Quote:
"The humidex is a measurement used by Canadian meteorologists to reflect the combined effect of heat and humidity. It differs from the heat index used in the United States in using dew point rather than relative humidity."
"The Heat index (HI) is an index that combines air temperature and relative humidity to determine an apparent temperature — how hot it actually feels."
Okay, I couldn't read past the first calculation, I think I have ADD...Gawd! I would just rather watch the cute meteorologist who tells me it's going to be warm.
