It's starting to get a little chilly here some days but I'm not going to stop riding for another month or so. So my question is, what gloves do you use when it gets cold out? I'm using leather gloves now but my hands get really cold and stiff after about 2 hours of riding. Not fun to pull the clutch in when your hands hurt. Any suggestions?
Get a pair of winter gloves. Great winter accessories can be found in the touring section of websites, catalogs & shops. Look for anything that has Thinsulate in it. This will give you a lot of warmth w/o all the bulk.
You might also want to check out a balaclava, which you wear under your helmet to keep your head, face & neck warm.
There are lots of accessories you can buy to try to keep warm. Look for items that will wick away moisture so you'll stay warm AND dry.
I wear a textile jacket with a liner when it gets cold. I also wear a turtle neck of sorts~anything to cover my neck. Whenever I get a cold neck I freeze. The thinsulate gloves too. I also make sure whatever I wear blocks the wind. It makes a HUGE difference.
I put the liner back in the jacket, wear my cold weather socks, and wear a long john shirt underneath as well.
I also need to find a set of cold weather gloves and I would also like to get a neck warmer/mask. Even when I can keep my body comfy, the blasts of cold whisps on my neck and under the edge of the helmet are killer.
+1 to that ^ I absolutely hate to be cold, but I hate to not ride just b/c it's cold. Wearing as many layers of long underwear, etc as I can squeeze under my gear makes all the difference. Problem is, if you over-do it you end up looking and feeling like the Michelin Man!

Sportbike: Someone help me decide!!!
I have an old rain suit I wear over my leathers to cut down on the wind and I wear a turtle neck/underarmour underneath the leathers. It doesn't add much for bulk and the rain suit cuts the wind. Good to about 20-25 degrees. A Baclava is a good investment. Make sure it fits under your lid. I've had frostbite before and I faired well with the A* dristars last year. I rode in a 40-45 degree downpour and my hands stayed warm. Not much for protection though. Another choice is heated grips. I haven't tried them but I may with my new bike. As far as feet, I kept my Sidi's pasted up with sno-seal and polypro socks with wool over. Did well all last winter. If you find your fingers getting cold, stop for a while or just wiggle them like I do. Just remember keeping your core temperature up keeps your extremeties warmer.

I find the plastic liners that come with some mesh/textile jackets hold in moisture as well as block wind, and I end up freezing to death in the long run b/c the liner made me sweat too much. Maybe I wouldn't have that problem in a less humid environment...

I try to avoid riding in the cold now frankly but years ago when I was a bit more silly what I did was something a lil off from what anyone else might tell you. I headed out to the local army surplus store which also specialized in hunting gear for the local boys who liked to go stalk Bambii's Mom. The product I found that was just amazing was a pair of thinsulate glove liners. They were about the weight of a standard cotton glove. Very thin and easy to wear. I put them inside my regular riding gloves. It changed the feel of what I was used to only slightly and cut the wind and moisture completely off. The total cost was about 5 bucks.
Might try snooping around for something like that before you go off an spend real money on a pair of oven mitts that will completely change the tactile experience of riding the bike for you.
Cute one liners aside my suggestion is pretty valid and well worth looking into. I tend to have a ton of trouble finding gear that actually fits me. I am what you ladies like to call petite. *shudder*
I think I actually had a party when I finally found a local place that STOCKED the Euro size 38 Alpine Star boots that I put on my feets when I ride. I like to try my gear on before I buy so that sort of cuts out the ordering online thing. So I just spend time hunting for what looks good on me and fits my frame. As a result I get really attached to what I wear when I ride. I take care of it and I hate change.
I'm sure that there are others out there that have similar feeling. Maybe I'm just an odd duck?
No, your point is valid. I'm always looking for new ways to improve my riding experience.
I was just messin' with ya!
This is what having to work at night does to me. Darn consumers and their expectations that their debit & credit cards will work when they want to use them.
