Been there done that. I'd rather be in a tropical storm than a snow storm. It gets nice again pretty quick after a TS. As long as your house wasn't taken out by an accompanying tornado, or flooded, or damaged by flying debris, it's not too bad.
they already have schools closed for tomorrow and everything. i think it's stupid. i've lived here all 21 years, and have never been hurt by a tropical storm. now if it's like an f3 + hurricane, that's a different story, but this is stupid. i lived in tally for 6 months, when pensacola got wiped out in 04' and we didn't have school called out for us, until literally the morning of, and that was a real hurricane.
I've lived here for 24 years. They can close the schools, for all I care. That just makes it more likely that my office will be closed (which it is). That means I get to stay home and be paid.
Although, I brought some work home with me so I can do that tomorrow. I'm on call anyway, so I would have had to bring my laptop home regardless.
bah---thats not a storm. Add 30cm of snow to that, and you got a storm.
Add 100 knots of wind to it and you'll prefer that 12 inches of snow. We signed papers on our house the day before Hurricane Georges came in, moved in just after the roof was replaced, rode out Ivan in '04 and then Katrina in '05.
If you haven't had your feet on the ground after a major hurricane, you have no idea what it's like. I moved from Los Angeles and went through 10 or 15 earthquakes, a big storm is much worse. We did the harbor clearance diving in Gulfport, MS. right after the storm to get the port reopened. We had a front row seat for all of the devastation.

Yeah, I don't remember much killer weather in Michigan either, other than the odd tornado. It was a great place to grow up. But I can't take the cold anymore. I'll take my chances with the tropical storms/hurricanes so I can enjoy the warmth and almost continuous sunshine.
My personality is such that living in the colder states as an adult would have me so depressed I'd probably just curl up and die. I need lots of sunshine & warm weather to keep me going.
