Default Honda crf50 and xr50 ban...due to lead

I've been reading this all over the web the last couple of weeks. Joe and Tanya maybe you can fill us in a bit.

"recently there is a ban on sales on new and used honda "KID" bikes due to contents of lead but due to the focus of it being a kids bike, and considered a toy, toys cannot contain lead." The ban will go into effect 2/10/09

I've also read that places like Honda OEM, Tucker Rocky, and PU will not be allowed to sell parts.

This article outlines the ban...Checking Santa's Toys For Lead : NPR

I'm mainly worried about parts for the as my nephew's been riding it lately.

We are still getting clarification, but as I understand it, we will need to remove not just the CRF50s from the shor floor, but also TRX90, DS70, CRF70, CRF80... I'm not sure exactly where it cuts off.

A bit of clarification...maintenance parts are still salable. New units are not to be sold nor are non maintenance items (think forks, foot pegs, fenders, handle bars). This will be a temporary thing I am sure. It will more than likely be remedied in the near future by warning stickers (YZ85's, Raptor 80's and a couple other models will be sold with warning stickers even though they fall under the displacement that would be affected).

In this liberal country you can stretch the definition of just about anything pretty far.

I say piss off! It's my decision, get out of my life already. Give me a warning sticker I can remove if that will make you feel better. Like Brian said, if your kid is chewing on the frame, you've got bigger problems. Let's use a little common sense people. I'm not saying we should go back to the way things were in the 50's or 60's, just a little rational thought into what the "hazard" really is.

Just another reason for me to continue my belief that this civilization and the sheeple in it are doomed.

Who comes up with this? Our govenrment spends time to ban "lead containing motorbikes", and were in the middle of a depression. GREAT time to start banning things. As a parent, this pisses me off! I was going to buy Hunter a 50 for his birthday this year.... get him started early.
I think whomever came out with this needs to be sacked. Then sack the people that came up with this.

If you buy before Feb 10, you would likely get a pretty good deal.

BRP put an incredible rebate on the DS70 to push them out the door.

For us Yamaha dealers, there is no good reason to discount them. Yamaha is paying for flooring and any other cost associated with units we are not able to sell until they are able to be sold.

I always said those small-wheeled pit bikes were dangerous...

They contain lead??? Seriously? The kid is supposed to ride the bike, not eat it. If anything, I would be more worried about the 2 stroke nature of the motorbike over the fact that some of the parts on it contain a certain percentage of lead. I mean, how terrible is it to breathe in the fumes of a 2 stroke motor? Its burning oil for cris-sake!

Well...I gotta say...

The language of the law doesn't say it's about banning toys or banning things which might be eaten...it prohibits lead concentrations above a certain point in any product marketed for people under 12.

The quick answer is for mfrs to recommend the products for riders 13 and over.

Not many manufacturers still offer a 2-stroke. I think Yamaha may be the only one with the PW to tell you the truth.
