Anybody been locked up for speeding?
Have you or your friends been locked up in jail for speeding in VA? With all the talk about speeding and running from cops, I'm surprised nobody I know has been locked up. Are attorneys getting you guys off? If so, please share!
Who is THE best criminal attorney in VA? Think it's best to have a lawyer lined up BEFORE you need one if you know what I mean. I think most people speed once in awhile and I hear above 90MPH is Jail time.

Not sure where you are getting your info. I was a LEO for 30 years in No Va. You do not get locked up for speeding in Va. By law you have to be released on your signature with only a few exceptions. Hiring a lawyer ahead of time if your right but it will do you no good on the street when stopped. If you're arrested it's for something besides speeding.

Doing 90MPH+ is considered wreckless driving in VA. State usually wants jail-time for this. If on top of that you run from police....good luck to you.

Damn.................................. It's RECKLESS. Rant off. The OP wasn't clear and I took it to mean going to jail when stopped for speeding. If he meant upon conviction then it can happen but rarely does. Even with reckless. I'd say 9 out of 10 reckless charges are reduced in plea bargains. Now if you run from the police then you can guarantee a jail sentence.

1.why would you want to run from the police.
2.if you must go that fast take it to the track.
3.but if you choose to mash it to the speed of going to jail, even losing your license. make sure your riding ability allows you to smoke the cops.
4.if you gonna run, don't choke! once you start running and then choke, you'll get a down town boot up the you know what!!!!!!
5.sum it all up...there's a time and place for everything, find a spot for straight riding, and a early time of day when there's no traffic.(no cops) or ride the twisties at a early time no cars no cops!!!

You know....there was a time when I thought I could beat traffic(including cops) by being up at a military time of the morning, but then I was VERY disapointed to find that there are still decent amounts of cops out VERY early. There are even CHECKPOINTS!! I was like what the? Why such a show of force when nobody is out? I mean, even if they know speeders are out this time, anybody who would get up at 4AM to go rip it up deserves to have thier fun especially considering no cars out. I mean I don't think you will catch many stupid squids and 15 year old Civic fart cans out that early. Only the more serious riders would be out.
Final issue, is when you are like the only bike out, VEHICLE even, not that hard to find you.
CHECKPOINTS!!?? Really now.

Nobody goes to jail unless....
I'm just really confused about the "jail threat". I have NEVER heard of anybody I know getting time and this thread isn't helping either. Not one person online has admitted any jail-time for themselves or others. So is jail-time a joke? Scare tactics?
Well...I did hear about one guy with police chase and all, but then I heard the word "drug" mentioned and I was like ahhhhh.
So there you have it folks! Nobody goes to jail for speeding until somebody dies, then it could and very well WILL be a murder charge.

well i was passing through ohio 7 years ago in dayton for the trans am nats of course in my trans am i got clocked at 132 mph in a 35mph zone. they let me go on the condition i'd show up for court. the judge gave me a huge fine and told me to not drive in ohio anymore kinda in a joking but serious manner. on my bike i have ran once and my friend got caught (we split and the cop followed him) he told him he didnt know me and i just pulled up next to him cause we were both on bikes

there's a thread on the busanation website about a rider being arrested for fleeing from police. i believe its not speeding that gets you arrested, but fleeing then getting caught is where the jail trouble comes from. just a guess.

Yes!
I personally know "a friend" that was pulled over in Henrico County outside of Richmond, VA for 100+ MPH.
Luckily the LEO wrote 99 but unfortunately the judge understands that this means over 100 but cooperative.
Several weeks after the incident which "my friend" was not arrested he went to court and received the day in jail (6-8 hours) + $350 I think for a fine.
So yes it depends on the jurisdcition and I think "my friend" could find and scan the paperwork too!

they let him go. they were in a parking lot somewhere and heard us he was on a gsxr 1000 with a d&d and i was on my tlr with open pipes so at 2:30 am on a tuesday guess we made some unavoidable noise they didnt have a speed on us we slowed when we seen flashing lights from about a mile away they were way back there i cut up a side street and the cop went after him. as we were going up a bridge he said he was at 144mph and i seen 136mph when i had looked. stupid but fun

I know a guy who is the son of a Botetourt County Sheriff. He told me that they passed a law that say's automatic 10 days in jail for anything over 90mph.
Quote:

Fact: The average amount of jail time for someone convicted of speeding over 90 mph in Virginia is greater than the average amount of jail time given to someone convicted of a first offense felony drug possession, felony shoplifting, felony embezzlement, felony grand theft auto or DUI with a BAC that is less than twice the legal amount! That's right, the speeder is treated more harshly in Virginia than drug addicts, thieves, and drunks!
