Default SV650 K&N air filter

I've been told that there are two versions of the K&N air filter SU-6599 for 1st gen. SV650s: one with a round intake hole and one with a much larger oval hole. Is this true? Which one would be recommended, since the larger hole would benefit top end but would be detrimental to low/midrange? Also, would cutting out the plastic around a round-hole K&N filter give the same result as an oval-hole filter? Thanks!

K&N released their first racing filter for the SV without testing (that is the one with the round back) They are more restrictive than stock and I know someone who dynoed one andlost HP over stock. IF you order one make sure it's the 2nd generation, and from what I hear the BMC gives you more airflow anyway.
