Hmmmm, I don't know if this will be good or not? The Irwin's were very dedicated to motorcycles and making some of the changes to the facility specifically for bikes (for example they have their own air fencing which is deployed during bike events), the new owner is an SCCA car racer by the way it looks. My concern is that car racers seem to LOVE to have all kinds of walls and Armco all over the place, especially really close to the racing surface. A track that's made safe for bikes to race on will generally be safe for anything to race on, but when a track is designed for car's to race on it's often times VERY dangerous for non-caged or non-race vehicles to be on due to limited or even no run-off area in places.
Time will tell, hopefully they don't add more barriers. But to the opposite extreme maybe this guy will be one of those who actually believes in having run-off area and will improve some of the remaining areas that desperately need more run-off room.

I'm not feeling it. Sorry, but a buddist in the family doesn't make you open-minded. It just means you're bangin' a buddist.

Car racers are usually less concerned about the racing surface then motorcycle racers. Plus the cars tend to really rip up the surface and cause a lot of rippling in the corners.
I'll withhold judgment until I see how the track fares. I hope to get out there next year.
I am hoping he will take an attitude like other tracks and bring the track up to modern standards for saftey. They have tons of land, clear it and create runoff which is good for both cars and bikes.....new surface etc....
but one thing at a time. ..........

What sucks is that the car racers are generally not overly concerned about the actual race surface condition/bumps because of a cars traction condition, with 4 large contact patches the situation isn't as important for them as it is for us racing bikes.
The SCCA is the big car racing org, they are actually the ones who require all the metal Armco barriers, without the barriers they won't race at a track (from what I have heard). From what I also heard their beef with run-off area is it can allow the car to dig in as it slides sideways and cause it to potentially flip, they would rather impact something by the way it sounds. With the new owner being an SCCA car racer it concerns me as to his priorities and approach to what safety is, as I said previously I hope he doesn't add more Armco.
The big issue with Blackhawk Farms is the fact that it's on land designated as 'wet lands' by Illinois, changes to areas falling into that designation is a huge deal from how it was explained to people confronting the track management - sadly several of the run-off areas around the track fall into that catagory.

as for the car stuff I have some friends in the scca I will ask about it, however based on the move at certain marquis tracks to add run off space I would say the add armco theory dosent sound right but I will find out.

I've raced there since I started racing in '96, in fact I'm racing there next weekend (September 15-16, 2007).
According to the rather conservative math I just did I've raced over 5000 miles on that track.
Why do you ask?

I was just there last weekend. We were told by track personnel that the new owner is very enthusiastic about having bikes on the track. He supposedly would like to get on a bike himself. We were also told that the new owner wanted to come and talk with the motorcycle people. If he did show up over the course of the weekend, he never ventured to our pit space. Either way, track employees were talking about how there are plans to move some walls or track sections. Hopefully they are in a good direction!! On a side note, the track will be safer next year from an Air Fence standpoint. As Nesba raised enough money on Saturday night for 4 sections!!
Mike, maybe I will see you down there on the 15th. I will be taking the Learning Curves license class.
