Hey guys I was wanting to swap my 04 636 shock for an 06 shock. Now they bolt right up basicly with no problem at all. But my question is this, after reading what someone else wrote on another site about this.
"the 03/04 vs. 05 shocks are not directly interchangable. They may mount up physically but there are differences, use at your own risk. If you look up the specs through the Ohlins or Race Tech site, you will see that the 03/04 calls for a base shock length of 340mm eye-to-eye, the 05 unit has a base length of 335.5mm - and 4.5mm of shock length when mounted can make quite a difference. The stroke length for the 03/04 is 72mm while the 05 unit is 64.5m"m
Now my question is how would that adversely change the handling?? I am not planning on racing this one as this is my street bike, but was wanting to upgrade the suspension. I picked up the 06 shock for 20 bucks so..... I also have converted the forks to an 06 front end aswell.
thanks in advance.
Dustin

The 03-04 suspension was too stiff. To actually tell you guys the whole story this is my Katrina flooded bike and I just wanted to make it a little nicer without a whole lot of cost. But the 04 shock is mad by Kayaba and the 05 is made by Showa, if that means any thing in terms of quality.

Yeah, i know the 03/04 ones were set up for a 240lb rider or something really silly.
No idea if it would be an easy swap, i'd have to look at it.

The answer seems apparent from these posts... it will work but it might not be the perfect solution. I would try it and see how it feels, that's the true test.
the best thing to do is to have it rebuilt with proper springs / dampening, or get an aftermarket shock... Even though SHOWA has a better rep than KYB, they are still not nearly in the same league as penske.
