Default How to working AMA and other races

Anyone know how one goes about becoming a race worker at races (ie, corner working, etc) . I live fairly near mid-ohio and it seems like a fun thing to do. I know they have WERA, Vintage and of course the AMA races.

You mean 'volunteer' right?

Contact the track or the racing organizations themselves and find out.

At most tracks, it's as easy as showing up the morning of the races & asking any track official when & where the Corner worker's meeting is.

As far as working an AMA event, my guess is that those guys are all trained professional corner workers. You've got a better shot at trying it out at a club racing event first... CCS, WERA etc.

Trust me, we appreciate every single one of those guys & girls that are out there standing watch... and frankly, I think this is hands down the best question I've ever seen asked on this forum since I joined the site. Makes me all warm & fuzzy inside

Yes - volunteer. I know that about all you get out of it is free tickets (for AMA), which is fine. I always thought it would be nice to be the guy standing on the 'other side' of the fence. You are 'working', but you also get a front seat view of the racing. Fun stuff.

I talked to an AMA corner-worker last year at Mid-Ohio - the impression I got was there really isn't much training they go through.

Ahh, yes cornerworking isn't hard to learn. I just finished my first weekend working here at Roebling Road Raceway near Savannah. I worked corner 3 on Saturday and corner 6 today. You just have to learn the flags somewhat, there's usually two of you at a station (one flags and works the radio while the other is the "runner" who picks up bikes).

I tried to get info about working an AMA event from some of the folks who were there today with no luck.

Oh yeah, WERA pays $50 per day which isn't bad at all when you get to see the racing for free.

And you can just show up to cornerwork most of the time but the lady that runs it likes to hear from you first.

I had a great time doing it and will do it again next time WERA comes around.
