What you just read is my opinion and is based on my experiences and the info I have acquired during my life, it's my interpretation and isn't written in stone. Yes, I post long responses regularly because I like to fully explain my views. Don't like it or agree with what I have to say? Then don't read it or respond to it! Respond like an immature idiot to posts of mine and I will just ignore you. Have a nice day.

do 20 track days....if you and your bike are still in one piece, you still have money, and still want to race then:
1. go to a race school to get certified.
2. pick a racing organization
3. pick a race
4. start in the back
5. don't crash
6. repeat 3 through 5 for another year
7. get a new bike

They run track day events & race schools down in FL. They can point you in the right direction.
I'll second RRRR6 & say that you should look into doing track days for about a season first. And DON'T go out there trying to push yourself & set a lap record, that's how you crash & hurt yourself. Go out there & slowly hone the skills you already have. Concentrate first on building a foundation to work with and becoming a better rider, THEN a racer. There's A LOT to learn about going fast. Don't rush yourself, take it one step at a time.
I'd even recommend the option of selling the R6 and getting an SV650. They make great race bikes that won't require you to spend an arm & a leg and there's a ton of competitive classes to race them in. The 600 class is EXPENSIVE if you want to be competitive and frankly, IMO, dangerous as a rookie... way too many other rookies out there thinking they're gonna be the next Rossi. The lightweight classes are much better for an aspiring racer, not only from a safety standpoint but financial and fundamental standpoints as well.

the first turn of your first race is an unmatchable experience!

Just go and do it. I have noticed everyone at the track will help and guide you. I do however suggest a couple of years of track day, that will cost about 1200.00. Besides you get use to riding a bike at speed, it teaches you how to handle the slower traffic and boneheaded moves made by people who are learning. Just one more thing, ride and have fun....
I would do some trackday. lots of them and see how it feels.
You have to remember one thing, the 600 class is one of the largest classes out there.
If you raced in the MW 600 class you also can be racing with Motards and SV's cause they fall under the max cc limit.
SV640 LW class is pretty much just them,
If you bad balls and a wish to wreak and go HW 1000cc you could race with everything under 1000cc 600/750's etc.
I started with a 750 and did my 1st race in NM won and than droped down to a 600. i am now dropping down to a 650 due to cost. SV's are forgiving on tires a little better than 600 and up bikes.
but if you do this, get ready to spend some money. tire's. It is wise to have another set of rims with new set of tires ready to go. need tire warmers. xtra parts.
to do a trackday for one say in AZ for 2 people its about 500 bucks, to do a race weekend in NM is close to 600-800 depending on how many class you enter in. thats 1 time a month 7 times a year. it adds up. this is not with if i fall and break stuff., or need new parts due to wear etc..
good luck. sorry if my spelling is crap half my keys are missing the letter

I'm interested in racing too. Been autocrossing and karting for years and i just love competition. I heard a rumor that some clubs might be starting a new Ninja 250 class, due to the new design and growing number of owners. Has anyone else heard this or seen their club start this? I wouldn't mind starting on something cheap and small like a 250.

there's a lot of New Yorkers that come race up at Loudon NH in the Loudon Road Racing Series where there's a big representation of EX500's.
The production twins class is a race class that's unique to Loudon & designed almost specifically for the EX500 but you'll also find some Ducati Monster 620's and GS500's in there as well, but believe it or not, they're just not competitive w/ the EX500 given equal riders.
I bought my EX for 1500 bucks & this is my 3rd season racing it... Plenty of other EX500's for similar prices or even less. The guys I race with are TOP knotch great guys & I love racing with them... gonna miss rubbing elbows with them when i get an SV next season.
I recommend doing some track days if you haven't already. Click the track day link in m sig for more info. (I can't really talk much about them cuz SB.net doesn't like me "promoting" them, but if you click the NESR link just above it you can find a LOT of people there that will answer any & all questions you may have)
By the way, there are races this weekend if you're interested in coming up & checking it out. I won't be there tomorrow, but I will be racing on Sunday if you want to meet up.
Don't Quit Your Day Job by Richard Malmros. It's about ski racing, but it's a fascinating read about the trials and tribulations of the mental aspects of competition.
