Default sport touring tires vs sport tires

I've been riding a couple seasons, done a couple trackdays, but I've never ridden on anything stickier than a D220. I've had a D220s, D205s and BT-45s. Never tried anything but that.

How much of a difference would it make to put some diablos or pilot sports on? I've never had enough confidence at the track to actually get a knee down. I hit max lean angle all the time (scraping hard parts), and have used the tire to (and maybe a little bit past) the edge. But I just don't feel comfortable getting off the bike and I think it may be partially because of my tires, partially because its a 500lbs bike.

After I wear this set of D220s out I think I'll give some sport street tires a shot. Will it be more or less the same or will there be a dramatic difference in grip/turning in quicker?
