newbie tire life question
im probably gonna end up doing a trackday in Nov, but most of the posts i see about tires show them completely obliterated. is this normal? should i be expecting to buy a new set of tires after a day at the track?

If they are new when you go, then I wouldnt think you would have to replace them.
I buy race take-offs and after my track day, I use them on the street for a month or so until my next track day....

Its all according to how rough the track is and how hard you ride. I've done 3 trackdays on my pilot race tires. But I've used tire warmers on 2 of them ,which will save your tires. My tires looked really bad after a trackday without the warmers, the cold tearing is what destroyes your tires..

You gonna go to Arroyo with the rest of us? If it's your first time on the track and if your still riding the 500 Ninja I'd recommend just having a new set of good street tires.
To answer your question. The track surface, your riding style, suspension, tire warmers will all play a part in tire life. I have also done three weekends on Michelin slicks (5 races in one weekend and two trackdays) but I'm using tire warmers which help conserve the tires life.
I've seen rear tires ruined after 6 laps due to poor suspension set-up. I've run 4 session on street tires, at a reduced pace, and had no problems on my street bike. Race rubber is cheap insurance for the track but not the best option for street riding IMO.

where's arroyo? i ws thinkin about firebird's trackday on nov 21st.
the front tire on my 500 still looks real good, but the rear tire has about 1/2 tread left and i dont want it to go bald midway through the day and im forced to buy a new seat already. cuz im a poor college kid scraping pennies together just to pay the track fee.
on a related note, how would i know if my suspension is set up right? i know how to adjust it and all that, but i just dont know what setting to put it at. thanks

it really depends on what kind of tire you have. and as many have said track conditions and how you ride are a factor...but in general if you have DOT approved race tiresm like diablo supercorsa's or 208GP'sm they are only good for about 6 heat cycles. about the same with slicks
if you have something like diablo corsa's, i have heard those are good for 3-5 track days.
idk what you mean by obliterated, but its normal for tires to ball on the edges and shred a little bit...that just means your pushin the tires.

There is a group of us going down for the Nov. 13 weekend. I can get you in for $75. It's 2 groups with 20 minute sessions. Alot more riding time than you get here locally. The total out of pocket will be less $, more riding time, and a better less crowded than here.
I have room in the trailer if you are really interested. First 3 to commit to going. I should be around this weekend. Call me if your interested.

its a decent street tire, but will it hold up at all in track conditions?

How wide is the rear rim? You may be able to fit a bit wider tire on to open up some options.

I'm just wondering what the little 125's are running. I'm trying to find a tire that will fit your bike that I think is worth a shit. May take a while, sorry, new territory for me on this one.

http://www.dropbears.com/u/utilities/tyrerim.htm
This may open up some options as far as what sizes of tire you can get. The bike will handle differently with a larger rear tire but you may be able to get a better tire.
