05 Track bikes?
I am looking for new track bike 05 ...yes I realize it will go down sometime and I will fix it if it does ...but I am tired of used bikes and not knowing what the previous owner did to them..... I am looking for a 250cc...I have seen the ninja 250cc brand new is like 2gs I belive...any others that might be a decent bike to get out on ....I have a 03 r6...but I rather keep that nice looking....as it is my daily drive too... thanks for any input

The Ninja 250 has not changed in 16 years. The 05 is virtually identical to the 1988 model. A new one OTD should run around $3300. Personally, I would rather buy a used one at half the price, source a used engine and just do an overhaul on the second engine. The cost of a gasket set, new crank bearings, main bearings, piston rings, cylinder honing and valve reconditioning will be a lot less than the price difference between a new bike and a used one with a rebuilt engine. That would essentially "zero mile" the engine and just follow break-in from there out. You're going to butcher the bike anyway to track prep it so why bother on a new bike? You'll never get your investment back. Figure $1500-$2000 for a used 250R and the remaining $1300 you would have spent would easily cover the second engine and the parts needed to rework it, new fork springs and maybe a decent rear shock. Throw another $200 into the mix and do steel rear and front lines. You can probably get away with getting a 250R on the track, fully prepped and in race trim for around $2500-$4000 depending on how much you pay for the bike and what you want to do. Aftermarket race bodywork can easily chew up $500.
A track bike is going to be severely punished. I go used on such machines and do the work myself to prep them. That way my primary cost is parts, not labor. I'd rather bring an abused, used bike back to life (honing and bore-outs are cheaper than new bikes) than destroy a new one quick.
The SV is also a great track bike.
Scour the WERA want-ads for race bikes for sale. Good deals to be had.

I'm gonna go with everyone else on this one. The SV would be and will be my choice next season.

is the 250r too slow to track?
I like the cost side of tracking 250r.
even 650 is a bit steep($) for tracking for fun.
linuxbikr, have you tracked a 250r, if so how was it?
thinking about tracking my 250r instead of selling it.

250 needs suspension work. They bottom out too much. Power is weak unless you can keep the momentem up. Top speed is about 100 with a long run with a wind to your back.
Do like me, buy a ZRX1200!! After riding a bike like that, even a ZX-10 feels like a toy.....

250 will teach you how to keep your momentum up in the corners...which is a very good thing. if you are really on a tight budget, id say track the 250 until you can afford to track a sv650 or whatever you want next

go to the cycleforums ninja 250 board. There's lots of info there. If I buy a 250 for the track it's gonna be a TZ hehehe.

is there a reason why a tz rather than a rgv/rs?
the tz's have a much better motor to mod than the aprilia...but the chassi is terrible. yet its the other way around for the aprilia...the engine is a joke but the chassi is incredible.
dicin with tz's is fun though...they motor me to death but in the twistys they'll be wobbling and ill be railin around the outside
just a matter of preference i guess...better motor or better chassi

Haven't ridden either but according to some of the racers at my local track, they think the TZ's are great. Ani't those RS's really expensive as well?
