avast home edition (if it's free it's for me) works really well and spybot S&D. The real key is to not use IE and switch to opera or firefox.

I use Adaware, Spybot and AVG. Haven't had a problem in years.

Host files help too.

I use Spybot & Pest Patrol for adware type crap and for virus stuff ETrust Antivirus.

I find many of the others hog resources and cost money & stuff.
