Default Where do automatic updates download to? I want to delete them...

hey guys,

I have to turn on my automatic updates to use the network down here at school... well i'm using a copy of windows that is on my laptop... so its shared on 2 computers... so technically its not legit even though its MY copy that I purchased... anyway...

I had 81 updates downloaded to my computer automatically. Where can I find these files and delete them?

I don't want one of these updates to cause problems for my computer... especially with genuine advantage crap... (or should I not worry about that... if it doesn't get downloaded automatically with automatic updates)

The network down here also made us download the program "policykey.exe" which is a trojan type program that won't allow me on the internet if don't have a virus protection program, or automatic updates on...

what a pain in the arse

ok... i think i found the files...

I did a search by date and found 80 files marked "update"

is this going to cause any problems with my system if I delete these?

81 updates downloaded, but not installed? is there associated hidden uninstall folders in c:/windows/system32? <--if so, they are installed and can be deleted. however, if you delete the uninstall folders, the update cannot be removed. only do this if you are sure the update is not causing conflicts.

if they're not installed, it wont hurt to delete them....but they aren't installed. thats a problem as most updates are either hotfixes, security patches, or product updates to correct errors.....

main problem your going to have is without genuine advantage, you'll always be getting notifications about new updates. yet, you wont be able to get them.

as for the policykey.exe, shut it down in the registry and continue as if nothing ever happened.

you can search the registry...make a backup first!!!

Start->Run. enter regedit, hit enter. you'll see the registry editor. press cntl+F, enter 'policykey' and hit return.

it should return any registry keys with that string. in particular, the keys should be under "local machine" or "current user".

example:HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

the registry is huge.....it may take some time, but if you can locate the policykey registry entries, thats the best way. nothing will run on a PC if its not in the registry, so it's in there somewhere.

who's the software developer?
