I have a similar post in the Games forum, but this might require more technical expertise than what I'm finding in there. I think I might be overlooking something within my laptop for this. Here's the story:
I'm wanting to stream music from my lappy to the 360.
I've done everything I know to do short of investigating which ports have to be open, which I think is a little above my head.
Here's my setup: (very simple, I think)
Cable (comcast) goes into modem. Linksys wireless router (compatible-- I checked on xbox dot com) is connected to modem. Connected to the wireless router (via hardline, not wireless) is the 360, and via wireless is my laptop.
The laptop runs on Windows XP Sp 2 (whichever is the latest SP).
I have set up my own network with a WEP encryption on the router. My laptop uses this connection to get online.
My 360 does not recognize any compatible computers at all on the network.

The xbox likes 3 software types. Windows Media Player 11, Windows Media Connect, and Zune. If your not running any of those with sharing turned on, the xbox won't recognize any computers networked in.
I use zune since I also have a zune. I can either stream from my zune library in my pc, or right off the zune itself.
xbox.com has a writeup about all of this.

I know, I know, I just feel like I'm not doing something right. I thougt I might get different answers here.
I am running the most recent version of windows media player (11). I have the "share music" panel checked to "yes" in the library folders.
According to all the links that have been posted (thanks, by the way) I have done everything right. I have all the necessary components and software.

Would having a basic Windows firewall enabled be keeping the 360 from recognizing the computer?

Umm... shouldn't, but maybe. I'd turn it off while you try to get things configured, but remember to turn it back on before you go back into the big bad world. You're relatively safe while you're behind your router firewall.
I had this problem too. I don't remember how I fixed it. I think it was a problem with either wmp11 and some new feature setting or something with ports. I am sorry I can't remember. I will look and see if I can figure out what I did.
id disable the windows firewall.. .its worthless anyways. Just get a good hardware firewall/router to plug in between you and the internet and you should be golden.

Oh, I think I remember. I had to enable UPNP on the router and also make sure that unpn services were running on the computer. It should work after that.
Also make sure the folder permissions are correct. WMP11 sets up the firewall automatically to pas through, so the only firewall you might have problems with is on your router.
Edit Something to try:
Go to run and type services.msc
Enable these services:
HTTP SSL
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
SSDP Discovery Service

Okay, while dealing with an issue with my router, I had to turn off my Windows firewall and reset the router itself.
After I solved the router issue, I decided to leave the Windows firewall off and try to find my laptop on the 360.
There it was, with all my music finally available. I'll turn enable the firewall now and see if the 360 can still talk to the laptop...

Didn't really read the thread, but make sure uPnP is on in the router, ports:
1900, 3390, 3776, 3932, 5555, 7777, 80, and 554 are open.
The last two are for the newest version of Winamp, which is what I use to get my desktop to talk to my 360. Movies must be in .wmv format, just a heads up.
Port-forward.com will help you with that stuff.
And I don't even bother with a software firewall to be honest at this point. If someone wants in, they'll get in. Otherwise the active scanning in Avast will take care of what my router's hardware firewall misses.
