i have some video from my race this past weekend but when i save it to my computer its really choppy.... almost like its only saving a certain amount of frames per second. are there any programs (or maybe i'm just not doing it right) that will make this better? btw, i used windows movie maker.

Windows movie maker is usually good especially since it is so simple. I am assuming that you are using firewire. I think having the right format should make a big difference. Try following Microsoft's guide here.
If you can't get it try editing it in dv format and putting it back on the tape. Then import it.
