Default Computer help

Hey, my comp has been acting up lately and I know I don't have the right protection. I currently have "Ad-Aware SE Personal" on my comp and run it almost every week but really no protection from anything else. The comp came with McAfee but that was only for a 1yr subscription. I heard there were programs I can download for free and be fully protected. What are these and where can I get them?

SoftwareFor.org: Home of Software for Starving Students

This is a torrent you can download that has all freeware applications on it. It has a good antivirus program and spybot s&d, and all that good stuff. Its a nice package for people that don't want to hunt down freeware programs. All you have to do is burn it to a cd. It even has the software to do that in one of the folders of the download. You need a torrent downloader, like Azureus, to get it. (edit: they now have a link for a direct download)

I think the antivirus they put on there is Free Antivirus for Windows - Open source GPL virus scanner.

I use firefox with adblock plus installed and it has stopped a lot of crap from even getting on the computer in the first place.

Ad-aware is only an anti-adware software piece.

AVG makes a very good free anti virus software package. They are also un-bloated with bs code so it runs with low resource useage. AVG Free Advisor - Free antivirus and anti-spyware downloads

As for spyware, as long as you keep your browser up to date and quit surfin porn site, you should be ok. Other than that you can use a multitude of spyware removal software thats usually free on the internet.

Just remember... you can only have 1 anti-virus software package on your computer, but you can have as many anti-spyware/adware software packages as you want.

And you might want to describe "acting up" with a bit more detail....

It real hasn't ever acted up on me untill yesterday. IE kept opening by itself. A bunch of them kept poping up and basically froze everything up. I couldn't click on anything or even close all those windows. They were coming up too fast. It hasn't acted up since but still, I know I am leaving myself wide open for BS to destroy my comp.

Uh, yeah, endless IE windows sounds like spyware. As Spy007 pointed out, nothing wrong with running mutiple apps to catch spyware, especially since so many are free.

spybot S & D will catch and block a lot of bad ie pages and hijacks. Also Try switching over to firefox. Check out that link I posted. It has a lot of useful stuff.

It's already been posted, but AVG Free addition (download.com) is an AWESOME program totally for free, and it's really simple.

I set mine to update itself everyday, and I run the full utility once a week. Good stuff.
