Ok, I need some free firewall software of some sort... keep getting taken over...
hey guys,
my computer keeps gettin taken over by virus's... these college campus networks are less than secure... currently i have some sort of virus that is turning off my windows firewall and when i go to open it, it says something about it has failed, etc...
I'm getting a "memory at address 0x00000000 failed to..." and once that was popping up, I couldn't open windows media player because my comp "didn't have enough memory" but i could run counterstrike and internet explorer and download spy subtract...
anyway, i so i download spysubtract and it found some stuff... after i removed those items I could open windows media player... somehow i found enough memory then...
I need something to keep me from getting these problems... I frequently use cwshredder, w32 trojan remover, hijackthis, disk cleanup, adware se...
any suggestions?

My advice to you is to backup your documents and just re-install windows selecting the long format option. I work in the computer shop at my uni (kind of the helpdesk for hardware issues) and we deal with 2 kinds of stuff: hardware and viruses/spyware. What we usually do when we get a heavily infected pc we do our best to clean it up using SpyBot, Windows Defender, HijackThis and CWShredder. Usually these help but once you start getting windows errors the best advice I can give you is to reinstall windows as it is probably a big mess. I don't know what you are using to surf the net but 99% of the time when someone with a slow computer full of spyware comes to me he is generally using IE. If that's the case with you I would suggest you get used to using firefox. The way I keep my computer clean is to use FireFox, McAfee and spybot (check for spyware 3-4 times every year). I used to use firewall but to tell you the truth it didn't do anything so I just removed it (my firewall was ZoneAlarm). Trust me I've been to many sites full of shit while looking for cracks and stuff like that and never got any viruses with or without the firewall. Sooo my suggestion is:
0. Back-up!
1. Reinstall windows.
2. Install firefox.
3. Install McAfee (or some anti-virus with on-access scan)
4. Install spybot and check your computer few times every year.
If that doesn't help then use all the other software you've listed to the point you start getting windows errors again. Then reinstall windows and repeat

eh... i don't really feel like going through the hassle of re-installing everything yet...
i am an i.e. user, but i'm pretty strict about what i will go to... i have used firefox, opera, and netscape... i'm gonna give netscape a shot again...
i'm running a copy of windows xp that one of my other systems is running, so pretty much i can't do updates, etc or i'll get locked down... which limits what i can do...
i frequently run spyware stuff... like once a week... these college networks are less than secure and you get tons of stuff from them
i may have some compatability issues as well... i built this computer from scratch and my nforce4 ultra board just came out when i started using it and bioforce may have not worked out all the bugs..

I got this new software called Zone Alarm. I D/L it through a torrent. It seems to be working awesome. I was playing around on my computer yesterday. Lime wire was opening up by its self. I started up the software and it found the virus automatically. I reccomend it.
get us a screen shot of the exact error and post it on here, and quit surfing porn sites LOL, but seriously get a screen shot fo the error it may be as simple as running the repair option from your windows disk, could just be a few ate up or corrupt DLL's. I'm an IT admin and helpdesk and work with this stuff all the time, but you have to see it before you can fix it.
i seem to have fixed it... i think... we'll see...
no porn here... but i am a huge counterstrike junkie and may have picked up something thru a nonsecure server... other than that... i'm not sure where i picked it up from...
It's not necessary to lay a foul tongue on me my friend. I could get upset. Things could get out of hand. Then in self defense, I could do something to you that you would not like, right here. Max Cady
