"Network Cable is Unplugged" but it's not unplugged...
Hey everyone.
I'm having a bitch of a time with my fiancee's computer. She's got a Comcast Cable Modem running to a Netgear wireless router.
I have my laptop and my Xbox 360 running through the system just fine as we speak, but when I try to boot up her desktop, I get a message telling me that "a network cable is unplugged." Well, after moving all of her stuff around and going to check the modem and router, I discovered that nothing at all is actually unplugged. Yet I can't get this message to go away.
She says that this happens sometimes, but will fix itself almost instantly...but this has been going on for several hours now.
Any suggestions??

I will try that when I get home.
I'm thinking that the cable itself may be bad, because I can't even access the router by typing in it's IP address or whatever. The other times that this has happened, I've still been able to communicate with the router and adjust settings to try and restart the connection.

That, or i've had just one port go bad on a router before from a lightning strike and things like that.
OR- the network card/ motherboard may be bad. I've had that happen on SEVERAL occassions.
That was one thing that I DID try...I actually thought to switch to another port on the router. I also thought to run without the router and go directly from the modem to the desktop. Neither of those made a difference.
I'm going to try to hook my laptop up directly to the cable that the desktop is hooked to. If I get a signal like that, then I'm going to assume it's the network card in the desktop. If I don't get a signal, then I'm going to assume it's the cord.

Alright guys...my laptop was giving me fits. It wouldn't let me disable the wireless network card, so I couldn't figure out if the cable would connect with the laptop or not...
...however...
I did bring the wireless router up near the computer and try to plug it into the cable that was connected to the desktop. After plugging everything in, I had a direct connection from the modem to the wireless router, and I still got nothing from the wireless router. When plugged in, I was able to access the router with my laptop, but I was still not able to access the internet and I wasn't getting the "connected to internet" flashing light on the router. This leads me to believe that the cable going from where the router and modem are setup to the computer is what's actually gone bad.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that cable were still good, then I would get the internet on the laptop if I plugged the wireless router directly into the modem, right??

Bought a new cable and wired it all up, and now I'm good to go.
Kinda funny to me that the cable would go bad without anything actually changing in the system or the setup...not to mention the cable is in a spot where NOTHING touches it, so there's not even anything that could've crimped it or anything...oh well, such is life!!!
