I've got a problem with my WMP. It will play songs just fine. It will play downloaded videos just fine. It will play streaming videos just fine. But when I try to play a DVD using WMP, the movie will play for about 2-5 seconds (video & audio) but then will start to hang up really, really bad for 30 seconds or so, and then WMP will basically freeze all toghether and will end up not responding.
I've upgraded from WMP 10 to WMP 11, but with no improvement.
Any suggestions?
Let me know if you need more info. Thanks.

I don't know if the DVD-rom is a fuxxford or what brand it is. I can play DVDs with CyberLink Power DVD, but the sound is somewhat distorted (kind of like the sounds are underwater) and the movie seems to hesitate or jump just a little bit once in a while. The picture and sound aren't always perfectly smooth.
Basically this all started with a problem I had earlier. When my computer tried to boot up, it would get a "Keyboard Failure" and then would never actually start booting. It would just sit there and never boot up because of that alarm.
My buddy that put together the computer had one of his tech guys look at it but he could never really figure out what was wrong. He took the hard drive out and put it in a different case, but it still wouldn't boot. He ended up putting in a new hard drive and did something like "ghosting" the programs, documents, and pics from the problem HD onto the new HD. It seemed he forgot to install the driver for the DVD player, so had me download the CyberLink DVD program. But that's where I'm at now. I still can't get my DVD to function correctly like they were before the Keyboard Failure and swapping the Hard Drives.
At first when I couldn't play the DVD is when I simply did an upgrade from WMP 10 to 11. I didn't do any kind of uninstall then reinstall there.

I meant, is your dvd drive fucked? lol . Im no computer geek or anything, but If your having problems with both players I'd say you probably need to update the drivers and the firmware for the dvd-rom drive, form the manufacturers site. Or your drive could just be going out. The only time I have ever had wmp or any other player freeze is because of a bad media file or scratched dvd.

It seems as though you don't have the drivers or the firmware for your drive. When you installed that program all you got was a new player. Did you pay for it or was it free? cuz if you payed for it, I'd samck him. Find out what drive it is in your device manager, and get the files you need.
might just be a connection issue. have had this happen on a few clients computers. newer dvd drives run on dma data transfer. if yours is running pio it will lag, lock up or become jumpy. to check connection, control panel> system> hardware tab> device manager> + on ide ata/atpi controllers>primary ide controller (check both of them, one at a time)> advanced settings tab> device zero and device one should have a transfer mode of dma if availible. if not choose dma option.

Just checked. Had "Use DMA if available" already selected. Wasn't running pio.
Thanks.

do you have an issue playing music from cd? if it is only video i would blame a codec issue. if the music lags as well its time to get a new drive. when replacing the drive be sure to use the new cable just in case. good luck

Plays music from a CD just fine.
Just downloaded XP Codec Pack 2.0.8
Codec pack didn't help. Video still plays for a couple seconds. WMP then seems to hang up for a while and the video goes away, then after a bit, all I get is the audio.

Na, cause I can download a porn video from the net and it will play it just fine. But I grab a DVD off the shelf that I used to be able to watch, and I start having problems. Maybe it won't play because it's not a porn DVD. Maybe I have a strictly "porn only" version of WMP that won't play anything that isn't porn.

This happened to a friend of mine's laptop. DVDs played jerky and the sound was messed up. I changed the registry and reset the dma state and the laptop plays dvds fine now.
Can you do a printscreen of your IDE channel properties from the device manager?
