Before I go buy a Windows Xp or Vista, is there "an alternative" to purchasing from the local shop?

Yeah, there are "alternatives", but I wouldn't recommend them. It's a serious pain in the ass. I'll leave it at that...

he's not lying, it's a pain in the ass...and even if you do find an "alternative" you cant get any updates thanks to microsofts "genuine verification tool" on the update site

Get XP Pro. I'd avoid Vista until the bugs are worked out. Also, if it's an older machine (older than 6 months) you might run into device driver compatibility issues.
