....and formatted the HDD, and now it doesn't show up as a drive in My Computer. Help!
I took out the hdd from an old desktop. My goal was to clean it up and give it to my mom who is internet illiterate and could use it for other stuff. I formatted the drive and when that was done I shut everything down. The next day I powered everything back up, plugged it into my laptop via the usb cable from the external case and My Computer didn't recognize it as a drive. In fact, it didn't do anything. The red light on the external case that blinks really fast indicating data is being written blinked slowly and steadily like a turn signal. Did I fark the drive up?

you probably need to check the back of the drive to see how the jumpers are set - if you have it set as a master drive, and there is already a master drive on the pc, it wont be recognized, you might get lucky enough to have a diagram on the drive to show you where you need to put the jumper to set as auto or slave drive

If there isn't a diagram on the back, there might be a diagram on the top, just look around. I had this same problem whenever I got a new internal HD and put it in an external case. Gotta get the jumper settings right.

I formatted it after. I'll take it out and check for the jumper stuff...

.... so I've taken the HD out of the case, and after looking at the drive, I don't see anything that mentions jumper settings or any kind of toggle switch or whatever. Now what?

There are two possibilities.
--The drive doesn't work.
--The enclosure doesn't work.
Take the drive out of the enclosure and set it as a slave to your computer. If you can...then your problem will be with the enclosure.
when i first put the drive in the case and plugged it into my laptop (via usb) it worked. i salvaged old music, then formatted the drive to reinstall an OS. once it was done formatting, i turned everything off and went to bed. the next day i powered everything back on and my lappy wouldn't recognize the drive.
i dont know how to slave it directly to my laptop without opening it up, and i'd rather not do that.

Look up the HD online, I'm sure you'll be able to find out what settings it is capable of, and how to change them.

Yeah the case is plugged in. Check the OP. The red LED that shows it's on blinks instead of staying lit.

So the external case is blinking steady... I'm hoping the best for you that it's something wrong with the case, and not the hard drive itself. Did you check to see if Windows recognizes the external drive itself (the USB drive requires a driver, and that driver is what ends up being detected).
If the USB device is recognized, but the hard drive is not, check your Disk Management properties and see if it's a drive that just does not have a letter assignment.
If this fails, crack open the case and make sure all the pins on the hard drive are straight. If any of them are bent, that may be your problem.

sooooo, put it back in the desktop and see if it's recognized. otherwise, i agree with spike. HDD have a master, slave, or cable select jumpers that have to be right.....

is it a USB or 1394 connection?
Generally a USB drive enclosure will need it set to master. I don't think this is the problem. It sounds like Windows isn't giving it a drive assignment as bzbatl says. Look for the volume in the Disk Management and see if it see it, it may just not be giving it a drive letter.
