Default External HDD and MAC

So I bought an external HDD (USB) the other day and when I hooked it up to my friend's MAC it wasn't recognized?!? We tried a couple of different USB ports and restarted the computer and still nothing.

I tried it on my PC and my mom's PC and it works fine and it's formatted in FAT32 also, so I'm confused why it doesn't show up when hooked up to a MAC.

Anyone have a clue as to what's going on?

Assuming OS X, it should be visible, I use them all the time. You can't boot off an external USB drive (only Firewire), but that doesn't sound like what you're trying to do.

Yeah, the computer is running OSX 1.8 or something like that and all we're trying to do is transfer data. My buddy's firewire drive pops right up but I couldn't get this drive to work on his computer for some reason... I may just resort to taking a laptop over there and doing a LAN connection. That'll be a fun way to transfer 300+GBs
