My brother brought home a laptop that his CompEc teacher gave him. He asked me if I knew anything about it and of course I don't. It comes up to the login screen and I can't get past it because I dont have the password. Is there any way to get past this login screen without a password?
Thanks in advance

Boot it up in safe mode (hold either F8 or F12) and access the bios. You should be able to delete the password from there.

Scratch what I said about the F keys, found this on the net
The information below can be used to access the BIOS from all the major suppliers of BIOS chips and the Computer Manufacturers that use them.
During the initial boot of a computer the BIOS supplier will be displayed. If OEM logo splash screen is displayed, press ESC key to see the boot up information. Press the Pause/Break key if text displays too fast.

Sounds like it might have a network login / password that's required, or it requires a windows login / password for the previous user. There is most likely one for that user login showing up, and one for the administrator.
There is a way to get past it but it's not worth it to be honest with you...beacuse you don't know what's on the hard drive, or how abused that installation of windows is anyway (spyware, viruses, etc.). It would take more time for you to get past the login screen by creating a disk with the appropriate files, and checking the installation of Windows, than it would for you to simply reformat it like new.
Do you know how to reformat a computer? If so..do that. If not, i'll post again with how. By reformat, I mean format the hard-drive so it's empty, and re-install windows. It's an easy process as long as you have a windows installation cd.
I know how to format a computer and erase everything on the hard drive, but since the computer didnt come with any software im afraid if I do that then all I will have is a neat paperweight.

sometimes people leave the admin pass as: password.
Quote:
Offline NT Password & Registry editor
The offline NT password & registry editor is a great utility that enables users to overwrite their Windows NT, 2000, and XP SAM file, the file containing their passwords, with a new password. This will not allow a user to view their previous password, however, it will allow the user to gain access to their unencrypted files again.
This utility is free and can be found on the below link.
In addition to several other features, the EMCD, or Emergency Boot CD, is capable of changing the passwords of any user, including the administrator password in Windows NT, 2000, and XP without needing to know the previous password.
This utility is free and can be found on the below link.
Just reformat it man... you don't have to have any extra software. Just find ANY WINDOWS XP INSTALL CD... and install it. It will pick up the drivers for everything you need to operate the computer automatically. The only thing you might need to do, is download the drivers for your sound card, and video at a later time. Even if it doesnt install your video automatically, it will use generic video drivers, so you'll still be able to see everything fine.
Also, what are the specifics on this thing? Manufacturer, Model #, CD drive? Disk drive? Year it was made? Check the stickers on the bottom for any details

DO NOT REFOEMAT!!! You have no idea what you might lose..... first of all, what "login screen" are you getting stuck at? Windows, and what OS is it?
What you want if you can't get past there is a password finder. They work great and are all over the net.
The best thing would to find a WinPE disk from a torrent site or one of many forums like this one http://www.warezdonkey.com/index_original.php I know there are several PE disks there. A PE disk is a boot from CD version of XP LOADED with all the tools you need to fix ANYTHING.
You can fix virtually anything with one. Just download the Win PE files burn it to a CD set the comp to boot from CD, it will start and in a moment be up and running from the CD, then use the utilities on the disk to find the login pass, write it down reset it to boot from the harddrive and restart. Simple as that.
