i have cable broadband and almost everyday i have to unplug the modem and the router then plug them back in to use the internet. Why do I have to keep resetting the modem to get it to work again?

Same thing happened to me before. The modem is either going out or your signal isnt strong enough to keep the modem going. You may have to get a new modem that can pull in the signal at the lower level or they should be able to hopefully check the wires to make sure they are good or put a signal booster in the line. Good luck
same thing happened to me with a wireless base station... funny thing is, after i switched my wired connections to an old netgear hub and only used the base station as an access point for wireless it doesn't do it anymore... go fig

I had an old homo cable modem that needed restarted almost exactly every 15 minutes. It just started one day, I dunno if the cable company made a change or it got zapped by a power surge or something. Bought another cable modem off my friend and it's been solid since. I feel your pain

Have you tried connecting to just the modem? If the issue isn't there anymore, maybe try updating the firmware of the router. If the issue is there, call the ISP. Maybe check the NIC's properties for proper speed and duplex. Not sure if that would cause whatever issue you're having.
On another note, your ISP might not have enough IP addresses for everyone in your area, they will steal your ip if you are idle for too long, making it seem like your router/modem "isn't working" when in fact they're working fine, you just need to refresh your ip. You don't have to unplug them to do this
To reset the IP number on a PC:
Use ipconfig to release your current IP and obtain a new one.
From Start select Run, type Command.
In the Command window:
· type ipconfig /release. This releases the current IP number (for Windows ME ipconfig /release_all).
· type ipconfig /renew. This selects a new IP number (for Windows ME ipconfig /renew_all).
· type ipconfig. This displays the new IP number.
· Close the Command Window.
Post up what kind of cable modem and router you have.
I had a problem like that and it was the modem, not the router. Some have a tendency to be absolute trash after a year or so.
I've got the same problem with my modem. It only happens when I'm downloading large torrents. Usually happens in the middle of the night. Resetting the modem always fixes it. Modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB4220.

Hmm, I've had the same issue with several modems. Nothing has fixed it. Finally decided to have Time Warner come check it out and see if they can fix it. My dad and I have tried like 3 different modems, TW claims it may be poor signal...uhh...it was working fine for four years...on all the modems we tried, the modem will just stop responding and will go into the "power-cycle phase" but never actually reconnect. Even after truly powercycling sometimes it doesn't re-connect.
