Default question about exhange server/outlook

Right now my work has me accessing emails via a microsoft exhange server, online with outlook web access.

I want to use MS Outlook on my computer, but for some reason I cant... is there anything special I should be doing? Outlook wont take my username and password... do I need to set it up using POP3 instead of the exchange server???

Tech support for this kind of stuff is like non existant... I barely get one email back every other day... not a very effecient way of fixing stuff

you can't use POP3 protocol with an exchange server. Are you putting in the exchange server name, or the address you use to access your webmail on the configuration screen? In order for this to work you'll need the actual server name on the network, not the webmail address.

It's possible your account credientials are a little different.

So instead of "my.name" use "my.name@here.com" and use your normal password.

When setting up Outlook, choose "Microsoft Exchange Server." For the server name, if you can, open My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, your domain name. That should bring you to a list of servers and workstations. You can try telnetting to Port 25 on them and the one that connects is probably the Exchange server.

Or, open up a browser and type in the name of the server and if it opens OWA that is likely your Exchange server.

I think, not sure.

I think the issue is that im *not* on their server...

Their server is actually private (versus the one I have experience with, MPINet, here in orlando). So I cant access it from here in the US.

I would have to get it set up while actually being in/on their network.

Im waiting to hear back from the IT company.... I finally got him on the phone earlier today

Exchange support is going to be best handled by your/the IT staff. There's too many variables in a corporate environment for us to guess and stab at the answer effectively.

doesn't sound like he's in a true corporate environment for this... Sounds like he's (or his company's) using outsourced email services...

You need to find the mailservers address and enter it in the options setup account of outlook.

my mailserver is pop-server.hawaii and smtp-server.hawaii then it needs the username/pass. Its a remote server belonging to my ISP.

Sounds like he's got the right username and password. My guess is that it's not configured to the right port on the box.

Some are using SSL too.
