I'm running Slackware livecd now, I really like it much better than Windows. I havent been able to get the ubuntu or knoppix livecds to work. Is there a way with slackware to run the livecd, but have some settings stored on the harddrive to make it more permanent?

Sure, just create an e2fs part on your hdd, and save shit there. Write a quick and dirty shell script to restore your settings, and just run that script whenever you boot.

i'm a damn small linux addict, its 50mbs and runs from a cd, perfect for turning my old 233mhz, 1gb hd, 64mb ram (sdram at that) system into something usuable...

i'm trying out ubuntu right now on a newer laptop, but am unsure if it will recognize my nic (3c905c)

The 3c905 arch has been supported since 2.2 days.

I installed Ubuntu last night, can't get my wireless NIC to work. since there are no native linux drivers I'm having to use NDISWrapper, and the damn thing's not showing up in the network devices list. I know there's a file I need to edit, because I did that with Fedora. Problem is, the same .conf file doesn't seem to exist in ubuntu. I BELIEVE it was /etc/sbin/modprobe.conf

with ndiswrapper from what I remember you have to manually tell wlan0 to come up so:

ifconfig wlan0 up
ifconfig

should work.

nah it wasn't showing up at all. The driver was installed and working, but the wireless interface wasn't being recognized. I found a thread on the ubuntu forums that helped, as well as a better windows driver for use with linux. Between the two of them I got it working.

I would also recommend Ubuntu. I have it on my desktop and will put it on my laptop when the new distro comes out. Gentoo is good if you really want to customize your system, but it takes a long time to setup and you really have to know what your doing. They have a how-to, but if you don't follow it exactly your screwed. Even if you do follow it you might have to install some modules to make everything work.
Once you install Ubuntu go to the help section and it will walk you through setting your system up to play movies, install firewalls and antivirus software if you want it.
You can also install Wine on any Linux system and use it to run many windows applications. I use it to run DVDShrink.
Go to the Ubuntu site and they will ship you cds at no charge.

While I am a member of the Church, I don't find myself particularly drawn to Slackware. If you want to put that amount of effort forward, why not use BSD and have a truly solid system?

I've been using strictly FreeBSD for about 5 years now. Linux is just a stepping stone on the path to BSD.

Quite right. +1

I use windows as my gaming/ssh box, and BSD for everything else.

I've done the BSD thing but stayed partial to Debian. It just works for me and is simple for me to manage. The Debian installer could use some dumbing down for newbs but after you've got a system installed Debian is the way to go IMO
