For business laptops, there's really only 2 choices in my eyes: Dell Latitude series or IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T-series. Which ever you pick, i'd go with on-site next-day warranties as well as accidental damage coverage to mitigate loss.

The Dell D610 or 810 are pretty good notebooks for replacing your desktop. Usually have fast shipping mine took 2 days from the time I ordered it. Fully loaded.

It really depends what kind of multimedia features and games you need to use. These aren't meant to play cutting edge games like Oblivion or F.E.A.R. (unless you really crank down the details/resolution) but they play most RTS and MMORPG's just fine. As far as DVD (play back and/or ripping), they'll eat it right up.

You might consider a docking station with a monitor if you'll be using it as a desktop a lot. That will give you a bigger screen and the abilitiy to use a desktop keyboard and mouse for better comfort...but still you can undock it and tote it around when you need to be mobile.

In the past, I spent hundreds of hours on the C600 (personal) and T42 (former work box), now i've got a D600 (personal ) and D610 (work).

The D6xx series is the 14.1" version, the D8xx series is the larger 15.4" widescreen version, IIRC. The latest (D620/D820) have the Centrino Duo chipset in there, which is pretty smoking. You can also upgrade the video in the D820 to get 256MB of VRAM, but its not a gaming specific card.

Alienware is shit. Not the shit, just simply shit.

I recently picked up a Toshiba for light gaming and basic business stuff and it works like a champ.

If you need a laptop for business why do you need gigs of RAM and 9u2349723149782745 Ghz CPU's, unless your business is gaming or graphic design you'll never use the full horsepower of the computer. More importantly do you need battery life? If so your best bet is the Centrino stuff.

And a small screen.

Though, the A64 mobiles have been coming pretty close in battery life, lately...

I've heard the Lenovo's are hard to beat for business use, I'd probably pick one of those.

larger screens eat up more battery, as does screen brightness (though that's usually user-configurable).

Depends on the OEM. I've seen both in laptops. Kinda like how you can get the Pentium-M (aka Centrino) as well as the real Pentium 4....if you don't want your battery to last through POST ;-)

I haven't seen a P4 non-mobile in a laptop for years. They're all P4M's. Likewise the centrino is a pretty damned cool idea combine all Intel hardware for decent battery life. Nothing like packing a P4, Intel 855, Intel graphics, and a wireless adapter. From what it looked like Turion is the same way.
