Anyone know of a good data recovery company that can get my stuff off my hard drive that crapped out?

I called Dell, and they determined that it might be corrupted since I can't boot my OS. They sent me a new one, and I want everything off the bad one if possible.

If you have the bad disk uninstalled, I would look at the label, and check the jumper settings so you can boot the bad disk as a slave. Attach it to the same ribbon cable (prob. an IDE cable, so it's flat and is about 2 inches in width).
Do this after you install and image the new disk. If there's anything salvagable, Windows should be able to assign the bad disk a drive letter (e.g. D:\ or E:\, etc.) and you can run CHKDSK to recover data from the bad sectors.
This is for my Dell XPS laptop; I dunno if that matters. Thanks!

never heard of those. would the cost of the kit and learning how to do everything myself be cheaper than sending the disk off to some company that does this?

I downloaded and rana a program call SpinRite. It's a pretty good and extensive program for data recivery. I think it is about 85 bucks, buts its guaranteed to work or your money back (ay least it was when I ordered it.
BTW, you run the program off of a floppy disk, or you could off of a cd or usb.

It would be less expensive to DIY. Some data recovery services will guarantee a better chance at recovering data on a bad disk; they have clean rooms where they can actually tear down a hard disk drive and reassemble it with different platters, board, I/O elements, etc. Better chance at getting data back. It's hella expensive though.
I've used GetDataBack for NTFS. They might have a free trial on the web and can help recover data in bad sectors that Windows can't access.
Going forward, I would recommend puchasing an external hard disk where you can make copies (e.g. backups) of data. It's a lot less expensive.
Data Recovery services are going to start at about $10K and go up from there.
My latest data recovery efforts used both SpinRite and GetDataBack. You might want to check out BitTorrent for some umm...more full featured "testing and evaluation" copies.

Are you SERIOUS?! 10+?? Wow...I think I'll try to do it myself. I have an external harddisk, but I have no idea how to backup stuff. Will someone PM me a link to a site or sites I can check out?

On-track can normally recovery anything for about $2k... We use them regularly.
That's not that bad of a price. Interesting they're that low.
Their software isn't too shabby, but it tends to lockup. They've got some specialized apps that work pretty well for special circumstances (like corrupt/damaged Outlook .pst files).
I had no idea it was this costly just to retrieve data. I was assuming $500 or less....
