If the drive still spins its easy to get data off it even if it's been F Disked several times. If the drice doesnt work then your basicly screwed without spending a bundle.

I would love to be able to get some kind of DIY kit like what was mentioned earlier and try it myself- or maybe find someone that has one....

If the disk is still half way good, and your OS is just corrupted, you can probably just use ghost or any other imaging software and pull an image of the PC and recover everything. I've done this several times.

I'm not sure but I don't think you can download ghost... You can most likely buy it from Best buy or circuit city or online. There is a little reading to do, because you will have to create a boot disk and then you could have it boot and then backup the image to your external drive. Yeah you can set it up to sync with your external drive when you log out etc... or you can just do it manually. If you use ghost you can just back it up onto your external from time to time, and then recover if needed.

You could try removing the HD from you laptop, get an adapter $10 & install it as a slave in your desktop. To see if you can access it & save things to CD.
Can you hear the HD spin??
