i cant seem to get limewire to download on my home computer to download music. are there any other programs like limewire out there that you can download/ share music for free??

I used to have a program called Kazaa K-Lite K++ and it was the bomb-diggidy (don't ask). I can't find it now, but Ares is okay.

it seems to freeze up when installing java after 5 min or so i hit ctrl-alt-del and i get the not responding prompt.

sounds like there's more of an underlying issue with your computer that should probably get resolved.

By the way, LimeWire sucks. Look into a BitTorrent client if you want the best that's out there these days.

Make sure you have admin account on your computer if you are running XP, if that doesn't help, you are doing something wrong.
