For backing up your own DVDs, I recommend the following:
Install Nero 7 (Ultra Edition is preferred) as the burning software.
Install AnyDVD (from SlySoft) for decoding the DVD (w/o doing this, you can't read it to make a copy).
Install DVDShrink for compressing the DVD content (typically on a dual layer disk holding ~7.5GB) to fit a single layer disk (since dual layer disks are still quite expensive and you'd need a fairly new burner to use them).
AnyDVD can start up automatically with your computer and from there you don't need to mess with it at all.
Insert the DVD and then start DVDShrink.
Within DVDShrink, choose to open the DVD. It will take a minute or two to go through the folders and content.
Once the DVD is open in DVDShrink, select Backup and the program will write the contents to a temp folder on your hard drive (you select the temp folder the first time) and the burn the contents using Nero (you don't even have to open Nero, DVDShrink does that for you) to a blank DVD.
Optionally, you may choose to increase the compression of menus and bonus features as well as remove foreign language dubbing and subtitles (it will be apparent how to do this within DVDShrink) in order to reduce the compression needed for the actual movie.
I'm a firm believer in backup up my DVD's. I bought them once, I don't want to buy them 2 or 3 times (especially with a kid that will soon be pulling things off the shelves).
