Anyone ever heard of this???

I was at BestBuy the other day to look at some laptops. The sales guy was really pushing letting their people install extra RAM in it. I simply stated I could do it myself and why pay them $30 (literally) to do a 2 min. install that I could do myself? His reply was that I would void the warranty if I installed it myself...............WTF????? I never heard of this and told him so! I also added that I have spoken to multiple computer companies over the years and all have said the memory bank was user accessible and that there would not be an issue pertaining to the warranty. After a little bit of a heated argument about this I finally ended the conversation by dealing with someone else. Also according to him when Microsoft releases their new Windows software late this year early next year anyone with a Celeron processor will have to get another computer because it will not run on it......and some AMD and P4s might not either. This is twice I have had run ins with BestBuy staff and kind of getting fed up with them. Anyone else heard of these "myths"?

That installing RAM is pure BestBuy Bullshit. Arrest them for something damnit.

Not 100% sure about the AMD/Celeron stuff though.

I was thinking the same thing. It was in a higher dollar neighborhood and probably used to people just taking their word and dropping the money. I know I am from the South but I knew I wasn't that stupid

I figure high pressure sales bullshit.

ANY x86 processor will be able to run windows VISTA. ANYTHING. That's the problem with the x86 architecture. Anything 386 or better has always been able to run the same stuff. It's slowing the rest of us down. Computers shouldn't last ten years, it holds back advancement. One of the main reasons apple's have moved on and are fast: some shit just doesnt work on the G3 proc's anymore. BUT- the celeron's suck. So they might run it very slowly. But there is no fundamental difference in the way they send and recieve data, they just do it slower.

AND- installing memory DOES NOT void the warranty. HP had a memory recall on the RAM in my computer. (it's a compaq laptop). What did they do? They mailed me a new chip and a mini screwdriver, along with instructions to replace it.

If it was gonna void the warranty, they wouldnt have TOLD me to do it.

This guy seems like a dumbass. Please cock slap him for me.

Ahhh- Mr. Lesbian, you google skills are most impressive. But yeah, that's what i was saying. If you ask me, it SHOULDNT work. They should totally redesign processors to be better, and just say: "tough luck, buy a new damn computer". It's gonna happen eventually. It has to. Otherwise, we're gonna hit a really big wall. It makes sense to do it now, when we're still getting more speed out of the current proc's.

If they wait too long, we're going to need more power and have no way to get it, and be literally stuck for a year or two for something new to come out.

Oh well- that's what happens when you have idiots as your main customers....

Ohhh I forgot one other tid bit. The guy said the door (cover) that houses the RAM has security tape on it! WTF??? I have never seen it on a laptop! Some of the old desktops I have fooled with had security tape on the case but I haven't seen that in a while let alone seen it on a laptop expandable bank! Was really funny when one of "co-workers" told him he was wrong about the security tape on the bay/bank

echoing what lesbo said... total bullshit on the Ram install. As far as Windows Vista which is their next os, here are the system reqs. Modern CPU- basically anything 1.4GHZ or above, RAM-512MB minimum, and video card, needs to support WDDM (windows display driver model) which is basically any video chipset released in the last 24-30 months. I'd recommend selecting something with at least 64mb of dedicated video RAM if you want to take full advantage of all the new graphical stuff Vista has. So again the best buy scum bags are full of crap. Just another example of them misleading customers to up the commision...

I agree! The laptop I was looking at had the ATI graphics card in it.

My roomate bought his computer through there for 2200 and that was with a geforce 7800 video card, 2.13 ghz processor, dvd writer, serial ata hard drive. You get to customize every aspect of the laptop including what type of screen(WUXGA or WSXGA), what size, and everything else. He got a sager. If your interested look at their ratings. i believe they have 10/10 seller rating. This is an exact quote from my friend "they were awesome".

Im sure you dont need all of that power but you could downgrade and get a decent machine for a decent price (anything better Bestbuy can offer).

Another story, my roomate and i were just checking laptops out at bestbuy and were looking at this Toshiba. We were trying to figure out what graphics card was in it (specifically). Some douchebags came over and started asking us if we need help so we asked what was the graphics card that was inside the computer. One of the associates chimes in with "It's nVidia!" Hmm wow thanks. I can read the sticker that says its nvidia. So we decided to just say ok and leave cause they obviously dont know ANYTHING!

Edit: He is the kind of person who researches for months and months before buying something. I think he researched getting his new laptop for about 3 months.

Yea good call. Thats why i NEVER shop there. and because it is 20x's cheaper at www.newegg.com. Actually anybody who buys anything online to do with computers and doesnt know about this site. BUY THERE!!! Best site ever!

I used to work at Office Depot and if people asked me questions i didnt know i just told them flat out that i didnt know and would try to direct them towards someone else that knew. (i was a cashier not working the tech dept.) but i do know my fair share of stuff about technology.
