I just got one before x-mas. Overall it's a bit more expensive than $300, but I didn't have to pay for the PDA so it only cost me $170. Anyway, I have a dell Axim X51 PDA and Dell's wired GPS system (~$170 shipped). It comes with all the cables needed as well as a car charger and cradle with suction cup to put on your windshield. I thought it would be kinda cheesy but it works very very well. The software is very impressive, and again I thought the navigation would be a little gimmicky, but it's very impressive and actually 'faster' than the car navigation systems I've seen. Very nice for someone like me who's always getting lost

The reason I did not go with a pda gps is that the map was too small to be able to read it very well so I got a system to use on my 15.4" lap top. We have only used it a couple of times but it is really easy for us to be able to see.
I have used a Bluelogger bluetooth gps with an ipaq rx3115, ipaq hx4705, i-mate JAM and currently with an i-mate K-JAM. Software is Mapopolis. Works great, but I have not tried it on a bike...just four-wheeled vehicles.

I thought that the map would be too small as well, but it's very doable on the PDA screen. If you're using it for driving directions it's amazingly good, but if you want to zoom in and look around you're better off with the laptop version. For my purposes the PDA thing worked out better than I could have hoped for.
Are you asking for motorcycle or car? You'd have to do some fenagling to get it to work with a bike.

Opppps sorry I forgot about this thread. I got the DeLorme Earthmate LT-20 with Street Atlas USA 2006 from Circuit City for about $100.00. We just got back from a 7 day road trip and found that the mileage was pretty good but the times were a little longer than it actually took. Overall we are very pleased with how it works but need to find some way to mount the system so you do not have to hold it in your lap.

Give it about 20 years and you will understand why we need a bigger screen. I am glad this is for our car as it would be a bear to try and use this on bike.

The system we got has audio directions as well as audio inputs as well. Too bad the computer generated voice is a little too computerish. Would be a litte bettter if the voice was a little more lie like.
I have an HP IPaq hx4705 PDA with the HP bluetooth Navi. Well over the $300, but works really well. I know I hear good things about the Garmin iQue line, but there again I doubt you'll make your $300 mark. I'll agree with kman458 in that if you have a laptop already, getting the software and a GPS receiver would be an inexpensive solution, but size can be a disadvantage as well as an advantage. Just depends on needs. Having the large screen is nice for detail, but for basic turn-by-turn navi, the PDA screen works fine, and it a lot less cumbersome ... especially if you driving solo.
