I sell you PPP for 1000 Dollah if we use western union to mail the check to my place. On a better note http://www.newegg.com/ always has nice stuff and good reviews
I always recommend hp. Out of all the laptop manufacturers we've had here at work (hp, dell, gateway, toshiba, compaq) we've had the least problems with HPs.
We have quite a few 5-6 year old laptops still floating around that still work well. Out of the toshiba's we've had we had to send about 10 back out of the 60 we had, and we still have problems with some of them.
We have about 8 Gateways currently and 4 of them have been sent back for major repairs, they are not very good machines.

I have found Toshibas to be bullet proof as well as a good value. I travelled cross country twice with soft bags and a Toshiba on a bike and only got rid of it to get an update with a smaller screen.
I'm currently using a IBM Thinkpad T30. I got it off ebay for $600. It does all you want except burn cd's. I can get a DVD burner for $100. It also has a built in wireless card. I use this more than the monster I built. Ebay is your friend.
PS this thing has seen duty in Iraq so it is solid.
Ok, at my school, everyone gets a laptop as part of tuition. So every year, there's a new model laptop. So right now, there are 4 type of laptops in use at my school. 2 of them are compaq's including mine. They are by FAR the worst. Out of the 430 from my year, about 250 have had major repairs. Dead motherboards, dead screens, dead network cards, and of course dead hard drives. the list goes on. The newer compaqs are still bad, but not quite as much.
The current sophmores have HP's- havent heard too many complaints.
The freshmen have Dell's- and i've heard they have quite a few problems as well.
I had a dell in high school and can tell you they use better components and are MUCH faster. I've personally not had any problems with my compaq except for a dead hard drive, but in laptops they can die pretty quick if you move the laptop around with it on. I've left it on in my backpack and ran almost a mile across campus to class. not the best idea. It still lasted over 3 years though. Then the replacement one died, but it was refurbished, so whatever. My main complaint is that this computer is SLOW!! 1.7ghz, and it's slower than my 1ghz dell was. i ran things the same time on both of them, the dell was much much faster.
Whatever you do, though- and i always say this, you wont regret it. GET AN SXGA or UXGA display! you fit SOOO much more onto the screen that way. when you have only 1280x1024 resolution, everything is so huge, and you can barely fit anything on there.
Hope that helps?
