Anybody here know if you can burn DVD's to CD? I am looking for a dvd writer, and saw on ebay people selling software do durn DVD's to CD. I have a feeling it may be a waste of money. but it is alot cheaper thanj a writer if it is possible.
Don't waste your money on the DVD to CD writing software.
Buy a DVD burner ~ $40
Buy DVD-Rs (slightly more compatible with stand-alone players, Ritek is a good brand) ~$35 for 100 discs
Download DVD Decrypter (Free, hard to find, but you can get it still at www.doom9.net)
Download DVD Shrink (Free)
Download Nero (not free, but you can get a trial or crack it)
Decrypt the dvd using dvd decrypter, this will copy it to a folder on your hard drive. Load up DVD shrink, point it to the folder on your hard drive, it will compress the video and you can then burn it to a DVD right from the program (if you have nero installed).
Very easy. Of course, I'd advise you only do this to make backups of DVDs you own, otherwise it's illegal End disclaimer.
I wonder how that software will manage to do that and still maintain the integrity of the DVD.
If you want to get a writer, look for the following brands:
Budget:
NEC 35xx series
Pioneer
Top of the line:
Plextor PX-716xx series
I've had a Plextor CDRW for 3 years now and it hasn't failed me. Occasionally it requires recalibration (yes this drive can recalibrate itself if the head is out of alignment) but it's a very easy process and cost me 1 blank CDR.
If I ever upgrade to a DVD Burner, it would definitely be a Plextor again. Right now, I don't see the need for one.

You may wish to reconsider. I would've upgraded from my Plextor CD-R/W drive to my current Plextor 716a a LOT sooner if I would have paid attention and realized just how much faster the DVD drive is with ordinary CDs, ripping, burning, and such. I love my 716a and have recently started burning dual-layer dics with excellent results.

Thanks for the info. Right now I have a OEM DVD drive and a Plextor CDRW. I do see the difference in access speed between the DVD drive and my Plextor. The DVD drive definitely is much faster. However, I don't use my Plextor much to burn CDs. This factor alone is making me reconsider getting a DVD Writer. Besides, for $98 (Newegg), I could get a 200GB HD. I already have close to 500GB of storage space as it is.
Most DVD's, if you use DVD decryptor to rip the main feature into one VOB, you can fit the entire movie onto a single DVD-R without compression. You will not have any of the fancy stuff like scene selection or extra features, but you get the film. I don't rip them to DVD-R anymore though. I have dirrect access to them via my Terrabyte SATA Raid-5 HTPC. This is Definitely the way to go. . .
I just rent them, decrypt with decrypter, convert to 700meg avi with auto gordion knot, and save them to the hard drive. I got the puter hooked up to a 17" LCD tv/monitor so I just watch them on that in my bedroom. My buddy took one of my videos from a cd and put it on a dvd to watch on the big screen and it was really shitty quality on that big of a screen.
is there any difference between Ridata 100 cakebox, and the dynex 100 cakebox you get at best buy? because on newegg i can get a 100 cakebox of ridata for 35 shipped, whereas on bestbuy i just purchased a 100 of dynex for 70 bucks.
should i refund the dynex and order the ridata on newegg.com?
is ridata good? thanks

Sometimes DVDShrink doesn't "shrink" the DVD enough. I'm still new at this but any info is helpful.
check under setting for the recording media that you're going to use. if you set it to dvd 4.5 it should shrink the dvd to that size after the initial analysis.

I've been using Ritek/Ridata (same thing) for well over a year, probably 500+ discs and I've only burnt a few coasters (and that was software issues). I've had other discs that are not nearly a good. I have not heard of dynex, but they could be good, but not $70 good.
About the best media brand you can buy is Taiyo Yuden, you'll probably pay around $10 more than the riteks, but they are about the best quality. I order my stuff from www.supermediastore.com ... slow and expensive shipping, but the media is priced very well.
Definitely return the dynex to BB, though. That sounds like a LOT.
