I've been using DVD Decrypter (free), DVD Shrink (free) and Nero (not free, probably around $30) for about a year and I can't complain. There are probably many other programs that allow you to get the same end result, but this is the one I'm comfertable with.

I've been doing all kinds of this stuff for like 5 years. Gordian Knot has gotten better, but is hard to get excellent results with. Doom9.org has some good tutorials if you do want to get them down to 700mb. But honestly, it's easier to get them all through bittorrent, because there's lots of people that just batch a ton of movies.

I don't think any software is worth buying. Nothing beats the quality of dvd decrypter/dvd shrink, except for DVD X-Copy, which is now discontinued, because it was TOO good. All you had to do was put in an original and a blank, and hit GO. It was fantastic. I have every version they ever made. BUT- because it was discontinued, it has no dual layer support, and you never could shrink the quality down.

But seriously, DVD shrink/decrypter is the best combo out there right now. Don't fix what isn't broken. And Nero is ok for burning, but it a HUGE and overcomplicated program. It does a ton of stuff you never use. I have it just for a couple things i do, though.

Oh- and ritek dvd's are good quality. I've never had one go bad, but i usually only use their +RW's. Xbox likes them better than anything else i've used. But PS2 likes -R's. Go figure....

If you are using dvd decryptor to burn the ovie when you click on burn it will ask you if you want to format first just say yes and it will start burning after the format. For those of you saying that Ritek are good. Some are but you got to know what to look for. Just because you see Sony, Dynex and TDK dont mean nothing. When you get ritek I would suggest to get the Riteck 4x+r they are the best for this line. There manurfactor id is ricohjpnR01. If you got the right firmware you can burn faster then rated for without a problem. These I speek of can burn at 12x perfect.

The best media I would suggest is TY(Taiyo Yuden)

The biggest thing you got to look at is what burner and firm ware you got and then your topself player. What are they best with.

Have a look at http://www.videohelp.com/ > If you look to the left look for the dvd media and search the dvds you have and it will tell you what you got and give reviews. Another tip in buying media is to always buy the ones Made in Japan.

If you look over at the left again you will see Dvd Players. Look for the model number you got and see what reviews say. It will also tell you what it supports.

Here are some good media and cheap. Taiyo Yuden 4x -r
http://www.shop4tech.com/item3007.html

If you like newegg they got these to but they cost alot more there. If you google "discount codes for shop4tech" you will find codes to get 10% off on dvd's or if you know someone there they can give you a referal and get 10% off but this only works the first time unless you change your info. I would just google discount codes.

And to answer the original post someone already said it but I wouldnt waste the time to convert to cd topshelf players dont play cd's as good as dvd's. If you run into dvd's problem google your burner and see if it supports bitsetting and change the disk setting to dvd rom.

As far as Dvd Shrink and Dvd Decryptor they are great and still work but the support for them is no longer there. They have been forced to quick support and turn over there sites. I think it was Macrovision that got Decryptor and dont remember off hand who got Shrink. Look for ImgBurn it is by the same maker as Decryptor(LightningUK) but still has support. Infact the onlt thing you will notice ifferent is the name.

If you are interested in an alternative that can compress a little more for some of those bigger movies and has great customer support. Look for AnyDvd and CloneDvd made by Slysoft. If a new protection comes out or anything like that they tend to have an update within a couple days. In fact the urge there users to email them the logs with the new protections found or bugs so they can fix it

Hope this helps.

$40 per 100 aint to bad but you could get a better deal if you watch for them. I get 100 for $30. Dont usually buy from stores unless there is a great deal, but the ones I buy are the Sony 8x +r Made in Japan(it says 1x-8x) or the FujiFilm +r 4x or 8x(made in Japan).

As far as your encoding there is probably not aloy you can do. It all depends on your system. What do you got? Mine take around 30 minutes for encoding and burning combined.

Get a Dual-Layer drive, and find Dual-Layer DVD-R or DVD+R media.

I have a DL Lite-On drive I got from newegg for $40. You can't beat that, and especially since I don't have to compress over 99% of the movies I get from Netflix now.

I uploaded several write ups on www.afterdawn.com and can probably help you out with anything you need. Just PM me.

I use Img tool to burn my dvd's. It uses nero script to write the disc but that's about it. I have a Emachines p4 2.0 1gb ram 200gb hard drive with an external 4x dvd drive. I can rip and burn in like an hour. I've had the best luck burning at the slowest speed for compatibility in other dvd players. I also use dvd-r for compatibility. Staples sale 50 for 8 bucks. If you have any questions please ask. Video help is also a good source. If that don't work try doom9.org (i think)

Yes DL is good but for the price of the media I would use SL. DL are still $2-$3 a disc and SL can be had at .20 -.30 a disc. Yes you got to compress them but with very little or no difference. Another thing you got to look at is the layer break as some top selves have trouble and when you burn a DL you tend to have a jitters in the scan. Yes you can have good scans with dl media but you can have better with SL IMO. DL media has not been out as long and therefor have not had as much support as SL.

It is possible to have problems burning stuff as slow as you can as well. Same with overburning. It is best to burn at what the media is rated for if your burner permits it to burn that fast or slow.
