Default empty device manager / pnp not working

Here is the problem.... )

Problem Description:
1. When entering a web address in the browser I HAVE to preffis the entry with "http://www." and hitting the "go" button. w/o doing this - nothing will happen.

2. Device manager is completely empty, nothing - just a blank window. I did all the checking, ensuring pnp was enabled, trying the Aproposfix, yada, yada, yada... nothing has worked.

3. When inserting items such as my iPod shuffle into the USB port - nothing happens, however I could look through "mycomputer" and "see" the ipod.

4. using "my computer" seems like it takes 10 min. to load anything in it...

PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I am running out of patience with this stupid computer.

What kind of firewall, Virus protection, spyware protection, are you running?
Are you running IE or Firefox... (I recommend firefox)? This sounds like it could possibly be a worm like the w32.esbot.a or some such. If this is the case I would download updates from your virus protection program, and scan for viruses. Usually worms or viruses are the culprit if your computer starts doing something really strange and you haven't done anything different.

Something got on your PC, looks like it's time for a reformat/restore (if it'll work).

Since there's no background on what went on previously, I would have to agree with reformatting.

I use Norton System Works, and Norton Antivirus software - if you boot from the Norton System Works CD, it'll find the virus and resolve the issue, if that's the issue. If not, install System works, and run some of the diagnostics - there are so many - but there is one for Windows fixes - run that, and it will tell you what's wrong with Windows and how to fix it.

If you don't already have this tool, I think it's 50 or 60 bucks, available at Best Buy or wherever you get computer stuff in your area, and you have to get the latest version to work with Windows XP.

Good luck! I don't think you need to do the restore - you should be able to fix this with utilities and antivirus updates.

Unfortunately I am thinking the same thing. I might have to go and buy an external harddrive and move my itunes and pictures over and hope whatever bug got into my system didn't make it into those folders.......
Friggin computers.

BTW - I am using McAfee Virus software / firewall software and ran Ad-Aware SE to no avail. I am also running IE, I thought Firefox there was a problem with Firefox/Windows security?

Well.. got it to work (sort of)...

I found that if I go into regedt32 and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/Enum then add the users Everyone and SYSTEM, giving "Everyone" read only permission and "SYSTEM" full permission then resetting the permissions I was able to fix the problem with my device manager and plug and play. Now I just need to find out what my computer is hanging up on to make it run slower.
