Pentium 4's look for the 800mhz fsb (fsb = front side bus, the part of the comp that most/all of the data travels through) people will argue AMD bla bla but to be honest AMD in a lapper aint the ticket. AMD's are a tiny bit faster in overall speed but its like comparing a R1 to a Gixx 1k the difference isnt that big and average Joe wont see it.
Where you will see it is in HEAT. Heat is the #1 enemy in electronics, heat slows them down and in a laptop thats a huge problem. Intels run much cooler than AMD. I build and fix high end comps for fun for friends. Did it for a living before I blew my back out.
Comp USA has had some good deals recently. Get the fastest processser and as much memory as you can afford for a top performer. It will cut its run time on battery but if its a top performer your after more is better....
As to brands its Dell, Sony stick with the major makers, a lot of people dont like HP but to be honest they have a great service/support IMO...
Another option is to see what you like and then check here www.pricewatch.com a online search of distributors with comp stuff for sale. They will be the best price wise.
Don't get an HP or Compaq... they have slow motherboards.... Dell uses better ones.
For the fastest damn laptop ever, though- check out neotechpc.com. Not much for battery life, but you'll still get about an hour. If you want a blazing laptop, you can't have a lot of battery life, though.
Neotech has some cool features, like built in tv tuners, and one of them had a removable mp3 player, though that was a year ago and may be discontinued.
Also check out alienware.com
These two are PERFORMANCE oriented companies, and will totally spank all other laptops, because they use desktop processors, which are faster than the pentium M's.
And if you like graphics looking good, get an UXGA screen and the nicest video card you can.
and KH is right about the heat. AMD's put out a TON more. This was bad on the athlon based ones. The 64 bit ones are much better, and totally OWN the intel chips. If you want some serious power, the high end alienware comes with a desktop AMD Opteron proc... badass....
Plus, both neotech and alienware come in cool colors, which is what you should REALLY be concerned with....

LOL... i just watched the video... i should try to find the other one that they did....
The processor literally EXPLODED and jumped out of the motherboard. It was AWESOME.
But yeah, those Athlons were horrible, that's why they redesigned the palomino core and made it the thoroughbred. BUT- the 64 bit ones actually run very cool, comparable to the intel's. And Clock speed (GHZ) on the 64 AMD's is slower, but they are actually faster than the intels. (for those of you that dont know already)

For artistic / design stuff I'd recommend a Mac....that being said Alienware rocks for gaming.
Though Alienware is pricey...reg Windows machines are pretty affordable, even if you nuke em' with upgrades.
Me personally......I'll buy another Mac when I can.

ROFL *notice* Fred said Gaming.... try gaming on a mac LMAO *looks for mac gaming video*
Damn, you can get that sager with the amd 4200.... and it comes with the 7800 video card... which is great for gaming, and for the first time in years is a card that actually outclasses all games, instead of the other way around. It's a little extra money, but that's the way to go, for sure. It'll actually be useful for 3-4 years.....
But becuase i do my gaming on the desktop, i still prefer slim laptops.... all i do is watch movies, read comics, type, and surf the web. But nobody makes a thin, light laptop with a 15" screen with UXGA resolution that has pretty decent battery life. At least not that i've seen... oh well..

lol thats 3 but good luck they are all very good. Gamers prefer AMD, and not necessarily understanding the whole laptop issue as any real gamer uses a desktop not a laptop. The ideal gamer rig is an AMD 64 Desktop with about 2 gigs of RAM as this eBay auction shows:

A Tom's Hardware video. You put any kind of credability into Tom's?! That's like comming to SBN to ask about a harley.

You will not be disappointed with a Dell XPS laptop. We ,(inside The Game), use them on the road to broadcast our matches on. Recently at the Winter CPL here in Dallas TX, Intel held a Fear tournament solely on XPS machines. Fear, with all of the graphical elements at maximum settings can break even some of the strongest of the desktop powerhouses. The Dell XPS handled it flawlessly. They're a little pricy, but it's the best high end gaming laptop i've ever used, And in my expierence and 2nd line of work, i've used lots. I travel around the world doing professional play by play broadcasting and commentation of video games to the online video game community. It is imperative that our video feeds on the laptops be 100% no glitches, hitches, or tearing. What we see, our viewers see, and it must be perfect quality and nothing less. Our Dell XPS laptops have never let us down.
