Default For you computer guys..???

I have a couple window XP cd's, the box says "only with a new Dell PC".....can these be installed on anything? I have a bunch of other cd's still in wrappers that Dell sent me...going cheap if anyone has a use for them.

Generally you can't. But there's a simply way around it. All you have to do is make a copy of the disc and change the volume name to the right one (ex: WXPFPP_EN).

I know some people who slipstream the updates and create a new disc out of it so that when they reinstall, they don't have to download the updates.

Edit: Here's some more if you're interested:

- Windows XP Professional: WXPCCP_EN
- Windows XP Home: WXHCCP_EN
- Windows XP Professional OEM: WXPOEM_EN
- Windows XP Home OEM: WXHOEM_EN

My friend used to go dumpster diving out back of our General Office and was getting hundreds of CD's for Microsoft NT and then selling them on Ebay. That was until Microsoft sent him a Cease and Desist letter with the fines listed for each violation ($100K per copy sold). He instantly ceased and desisted. He then started complaining about his PC mysteriously transferring files while he was at work...damn Bill Gates.

It doesn't matter as I've got a Dell and I used the Dell Windows XP cd to install XP onto my system. However given that it's XP Pro or somesuch there's probably only 4 installs left before it turns into a huge headache.

I lurve XP corporate. erm..I didn't say that.

Or how about just creating an image file from a working copy and obtaining a multi user licence cd key? Worked for me for the past 5+ years, never a problem ever.

If this works, you will be the man forever. I need to go to a friend's house to reformat her XP home computer, all I have is XP pro discs. She has a valid key (just can't find her restore disc), and all I can find is a dell xp home CD, but she has a gateway. If this works, you'll be the coolest dude to walk on the earth.

restore disks are a joke full of unneccesary crap.

Just wipe it clean with a Microsoft OS and install the drivers yourself, your computer will THANK YOU and your OS will run much better.
