I am having loads of problems. Ill start with system info
Asus P5P800
P4 520, LGA 775
2.8 GHz 1MB L2-Cache,800MHz FSB
GeForce Fx 5500 oc 256 DDR AGP 8x/4x
4x256MB 3200 Geil value series
Xp Pro Sp2
Nero 6(Now using 7)
Here is what has happened recently. About a week ago. I was having trouble with my 200gb Maxtor Sata going in to PIO mode. Everything I did it would go to DMA 5 but then switch right back. There were times during this the pc would shut down while encoding with nero(updated). But nothing I did would keep the drive in DMA 5. I found ForceAspi and used it, that seemed to work but increased the shut down problems.
Last night I started to do a clean install and was finishing today and went ahead and tried to encode another movie with Nero 7. Same thing again. It runs for a minute but then shuts down. In Nero info tool it was showing that the ASPI was not install. Instead of going with the ForceASPI I went with Adaptec (ASPI 471a2). I am still in the process of updates and etc but getting ready to restart.
If anyone has any idea whats going on or what I can do, it will be greatfully appreciated.
System is on a 160Gb WD Ide and storage is a 200Gb Maxtor Sata. Something I have noticed also is the the monitor flickers every now and then. Temp inside pc case is 85F.
Right now I am able to encode with a proble using Nero 7 but dam it says 3h21m It has never taken that long with Nero 6 not even close. The hd is the wd ide and it is set to dma 4.
The shutting down could be from a number of things. Maybe you have some bad ram. Go to download.com and download Sissoft Sandra which is a benchmarking tool. Run the memory test which will test it to the fullest and if your PC shuts down or becomes unresponsive then you'll know that's it. It also has a slew of different tests that you can run that may help you narrow it down. Some tests you cannot run as it's the shareware version. Basically you want to see if you can get it to shut down on one of those tests. It could also be a wierdo psu problem. These problems are always fun to diagnose.
Check out your system resources as you are running Nero. Press ctrl-alt-del and click the performance tab. Watch that as you run the program to see is anything shoots out the roof. I am curious too see how Nero affects your PC.
I went to system properties - advanced - startup/recovery and de-select the reboot option.
There is an option in there to restart if there are any errors. I unticked the box and then also removed adaptec's aspi. I read that it can cause more trouble and really not needed.
Yes for nero using alot of cpu resources. It always has. Im not through with tweaks. NVE use about 175k its about 5gb that is encoding
No I never got the blue screen. thank goodness.
As far as being protected thats the first thing i did before I connected to net.
And yes there could be a power issue. I have added it up before and I really need a better psu. I currently have a 350w(came with case) but would like to go to 500w. This is a home built pc
Looks like it is all working so far. Im encoding 5gb right now and normally it would have already started acting up.
Thanks for all replys

Huffy, check the event log in admin options it will tell you whats been fuxorin up.
I HATE neros encoder. Slowest dam thing ever. Try WinAVI it rox. Makes home DVD compatable svcd or vcd's in record time. www.winavi.com get a cracker for it otherwise it leaves a huge winavi on screen. Best fastest vid converter there is hands down.
Hey KH my problem is with power. To me I find nero's encoder a little faster then the others.(but its a system hog) I have DvdSanta,Winavi, Dvdrebuilder and all sorts but I like nero a little more then the others. Icalculated what I have and the power it pull and I am gonna go check into a 500w psu in the morning.
