Well for about the last two maybe three weeks I have had no sound on my laptop.. Yesterday I decited to see what in the hell was wrong. About the only thing that I would come up with was that the speaker system its self was Fed up.
I called IBM and the guy on the phone was telling me that it was not a 'user replacable part'...I had to laugh because I had the old part in my had at the time.
Here are some of the pics that I took at work on Friday. Oh, and for those who dont know...I am an asst. network admin with a background in hardware.
I had every thing pulled apart....
then I needed it to get online and look up some part numbers. I could have used someone elses pc, but then I would not have been able to post this.
I know, I take shitty pics. Deal with it.

If you have a background in hardware, you should know to always have yourself properly grounded when working on any machine. Especially a $2000 laptop. Fuzzy carpet and fuzzy chair are big nonos. Oh and congrats on taking the plastics off your laptop. just kidding bro.

Oh snap...own3d by synergy for not wearing a wrist strap and properly grounding yourself. Whatever...I have a wrist strap but can't tell you the last time I wore it.
I hate taking apart laptops...especially when someone calls me late at night crying that she just spilled a beer on her roommates laptop. If she wasn't a smokin hottie I probably wouldn't have busted my ass to get that thing working again.

If you touch the case (grounded metal part) before grabbing anything expensive you should be somewhat alright.
Typically it's a system board or speaker assembly. It's usually the board itself, however I have serviced several systems for faulty speaker assemblies. If you need part numbers, I can PM a PDF that can be of assistance.
Ran into something similar. Bought a Dell laptop and 23 days later the hard drive fried. Called Dell and they said it no accessible by the owner and I would have to ship it back instead of just sending me a hard drive and installing it. I didn't want to wait 2 weeks to get it back (holiday week and such) so I went to CompUsa and bought another hard drive. 15 mins and 2 screws later I back in business. I hate computer companies sometimes.

Will, I had the same thing happen to me with my previous laptop. It came with a 4x DVD burner. About a week after I got it they started shipping the same laptop with a 8x DVD burner. I called Dell and they told me that I would have to send it back for the new burner. It wasn't worth it because it was my work computer and I could give it up. If they would have sent it to me I could have replaced in under an hour.
It's funny though that just earlier this week I ordered a HDD and new mouse pad for an older Dell and my Dell rep said nothing about them not being user replaceable. I expected them to say something about the mouse pad since you have to completely disassemble the laptop to replace it.
Did I mention that I love my Dell Latitude D610

That's kind of funny because when the smokin' hottie from above called Dell right before calling me, the first thing they told her to do is remove the HDD.

The company that provides my equipment (EMC) bought a load of Dells and had tons of hard drive failures in their laptops. Latitudes D600s, I think.
Just recently I had one of my users complaining that his speaker wasn't working and it was making his job impossible to do...he wasn't able to hear the collision detection "beep" in our crane setup software
One of my bosses and I originally told him to suck it up and deal with it after having a laugh at his expense "beep, beep". In the end I said screw it and ordered him a new laptop.
Dell wanted, if I remember correctly, $725 for a new board. So I just reloaded everything and gave it to one of our service guys who didn't need a "beep".
