Custom Computer
windows xp pro, $136
pentium mobo - $114 (Athlon, $68)
pentium 3.2 800 fsb $289.00 (why, when you can get a 64bit Athlon 2.0 1g fsb for $325)
2g ddr2 $450
256 m pci express $569
dvd/rw $22.99
650 w power supply $149
250g ata hd $111
Case $100
Total:
$1941 ($1931 for athlon, my personal choice)
Alienware Eqiuvalent, $4,466.00 (DOES NOT INCLUDE MONITOR!)
Take either system and add a 2405FPW (24" KICKASS DELL MONITOR!!11!) $1100
These two systems are almost EXACTLY the same.

I'll add to the agreement...alienware is great but you could build a comparable computer (possibly better) for far less $$.
I saw you said you don't know much about the interworkings of the PC...you could probably have a local shop build you what you want for way less (but more than if you build it yourself) than an off the shelf alienware.

I got all of those prices off of www.newegg.com, little cheaper than pricewatch.
Yea, I'm a computer geek, as I type this, I'm slaving over this ISP job until I get a govt. job.
^^ +1 ^^ I build all my own and I concur with this guy. FYI, the Athlon 64s are bad....way bad. They'll woop ass on a P4 all day long.
P.S. I know nothing > just a lowly LAN Admin

Decide what you want then go here and get the deals ---> http://www.pricewatch.com/ This is a on-line listing of suppliers with the stuff your looking for at the lowest possible cost. You will not get it any cheaper unless you steal it.
hell, i'll build one for you. just another hobby of mine, done 4 builds, all successful and rock solid. lifetime tech support (as long as my liver holds up anyway) and guarantee for the small fee of a OCZ Powerstream PSU.
Customs are actually really easy. For gaming, you definitely want AMD Athlons. Pentiums rock and roll for digital media, but given the state of business at Intel at the moment, I'd really stay away from Pentiums.

No way! get a DOA anything and you chalk it up to a lesson learned. Newegg.com has excellent RMA dept and they stick behind all their sales. Any custom builder will agree.

I just bought a XPS600 after much research. I found that you cannot beat the price of a XPS600 vs a comparable performace PC from another company. You either pay more for the same thing or get less for the same price. I bought the dual GTX's in SLI with 667mhz RAM (not available in most manufactured PC's when I purchased). Also upgraded to 10k rpm HD and unfortunately x64. Lotsa issues with x64, & nVidia hasn't put out any good drivers for the GTX's, but other than that, this rig kicks ass.
