Hey, I'm pretty much new to sportbikes, my only past with motorcycles is a few times with my uncle's harley's and a few dirtbikes. I'm pretty set on getting an '01 SV650S I found for $2k about 25 miles away.
I do have a question though, roughly how many miles/gallon of gas do you think I'll get out of it?(I don't have mondo bucks as I'm a high school student and I know i'm gunna get it bad when it comes to insurance on the SV)

it depends, are you getting full coverage or just liability? I have liability and comprehensive (in case of theft or natural disaster) and I only pay 397 a year. I have progressive.... I'm not sure what kinda insurance a 16 year old is going to have to have. 2K is a good deal on that bike if it's in good shape!!
You should expect to get about 40-45 mpg as far as gas goes. That's not the kinda mileage I get with my SV but there's something wrong with mine.

Alright, how well will the SV fair for a little track racing(don't know if I'll be doing any yet), and 1/4 mile drags?(know for sure I'm doing a few of them at BIR, main one being the High School shootout races)

Track like a curvy track? The SV is supposed to be one of the best beginning track bikes around so you will be fine. In the 1/4 the SV with an expert rider can do about 12 seconds flat but I imagine you won't be able to do much better than maybe 13s for a while.

The SV, like Spike said, is prolly one of the best beginner track bikes. Plenty fast enough to keep you entertained, suspension is good enough to drag knees with (assuming YOU are good enough to drag a knee), but forgiving enough where you shouldn't get yourself into trouble if you ride with your head.
I've got as bad as 35 mpg (running the twisties HARD, 8 - 11k rpm range), and as good as about 55 mph (when riding super easy with the stock gearing). On average, I get 40 - 45 mpg.
The magazines say the SV will run 11.90's @ around 110mph (corrected time and mph). In stock trim, I was running 12.90's @ 103mph (first time at the drags on a bike, but I've prolly put over 1,000 passes on the track in a car/truck). Best I've done now is 12.47 @ 107.59 (slip-on and 15/47 gearing w/ 520 chain conversion).
Insurance on my 03 (full coverage) is $600/year with no accidents/tickets. At only 16 years old, I'd expect it to be about double that.
oh, and $2k for a 01 SV is a smoking deal, as long as the bike is in pretty good shape.
Yep, the guy says the bikes in excellent shape mechanically, and great cosmetically, but the reason he's selling it for so little is because the bike tipped over on it's stand and the paint is partially scratched on one side, but I'm hoping I can touch it up.
$2k is an absolute steal for the bike considering it really is in the stated condition. I race an SV and they are awesome, and unless you are the next rossi you may never outgrow it.
Hey, hear your picking up an SV. Got an '03 650S myself. Not too sure if the '01 is carbed or injected, but mine is injected. Gas mileage i get around 40/60 (city/hwy), depending on how hard I ride the clutch, throttle, etc etc. I've gotten mileage as bad as 90 miles on the whole tank (4.3 gal)! Insurance, I'm active duty Army with USAA. I only pay like $300 a year for full-coverage. I'm also 23 with no accidents. (Me, not my bike). Not going to echo the stealing price either.
MPG figures?! Oh shut it! It is a 650 so it will be good but it gets more smiles per gal. I had one of those it was my 2nd bike and a very willing partner in crime.Smaller and more svelt than the new one with more TL to the looks it was a great bike and gave me Vtwin love. My bandit 1200 that followed did not even last 5k miles because in comparison to the sv it was zero fun with a motor that had no character, great motor yes the old gsxr1100 lump is one of the best, but I needed a twin again which ended up being an Aprilia. For $2k you will be grinning like the first time you get laid, great deal.
