Default Performance Question

Ok guys need your help.

First, my bike: 1998 Gsxr-750. All stock but with Micron slip-on. However I do have a TRE installed.

Type of rider I am: Well I am 43 yrs old. I ride my Gsxr like one would ride a Harley ..meaning I dont ride hard too often.

Problem: The other day me and a friend was hanging out one night. BTW he has a '02 Busa. We hit a stretch of highway that was wide open. So we decided to push it a little. We were neck and neck doing about 110mph. Then of course he left me like I was moving backwards. I figured that would happen but here is the problem. When I "tried" to catch up I was at full throttle doing about 112-115mph at about 8000 rpms (I think, I was trying to keep my eyes on the road and not the readouts). It seemed I could not go any faster. But I thought my bike would at least get 135 or so. My friend said that I should have dropped down into 5th got my rpms up to almost read line
and then hit 6th. I am not a "racer" per se. This is where I need your help.

Question: Is it rider skill or do I need a remapping. I bought the bike used from a friend that buys at auctions. I have not done anything to it that affects performance other than the TRE. What do you guys think?

When was the last time a tune up was done. It could be something simple like plugs, air filter or the top end needing a cleaning.

By the way, that bike should do 160+.

Which color power band are you using?

...No, I won't - that's dumb.

I'll bet that 6th wasn't making enough HP at 8k rpms to overcome 115mph. If your trying to reach high speeds you need to ride each gear out sequentially so that as one gear finishes the powerband and nears redline, the next gear above it is set to enter the top of the powerband.

Still though - you would think that at 100mph plus, top gear should allow you to at least creep up to top speed.

No, something is wrong with the tune of your bike. The '96-'97 GSXR750 had one tooth taller gearing than the '98.
I had a '97 and it pulled clean and hard in 6th gear from those speeds.
Your bike with stock gearing should do over 160mph. A Ninja 500R will probably do 115.

Thanks to all...

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I never knew anyone responded to this thread until I checked today.

I changed my plugs the other day. So we will see what happens. As far as the power band question. I have no earthly idea. I have not gotten it mapped since I had it. Should I get it mapped? I'm sure it was done when the Micron was put on...I guess. As far as the ride...it rides nicely...no problems what so ever. I only noticed this problem when I took it up on the high end. I guess I will have to wait until I get to do it again and then see.

Thanks guys...keep the feedback coming.
